I mean, creativity isn't just black and white either, though. There can be excellent characterizations, and there can be disaster's like what Viz did to Nettaigyo...

Wait, what did Viz do? I'm unfortunately out of the loop, but I'm prepared to fetch my pitchfork if need be.

I honestly haven't even managed to bring myself to read more after the first volume. The worst case of localization I've seen in a while, with the quiet Japanese loner Koyuki sounding like the stereotypical popular American cheerleader, to the point that I can physically hear the bubblegum.

And then Fujishiro came and lifted you to her place already in this life, even if you still have trouble accepting this...

Has the subtext really been that strong until recent chapters though?

Strong enough that I can't even joke that Ritsuko was saying what we all want, since most of us already thought Shino was seeing Nozomi as a woman anyway, even if she may not have realized this herself quite yet.

Well, this series has defied tropes before, it's entirely possible that it'll surprise us again after this cliffhanger. Similarly possible it won't, though.

Sadly this looks like it is going to do exactly what I assumed it would. I get why to an extent, but it is frustrating to read.

And yet, if I’m completely honest... I can’t say I wouldn’t have it turn out in a similar way.

And the author has pretty much established the pattern going forward: each Amalreiks member has a tragic past they can’t escape, and doing so means a very likely death. No face turn without immediate consequence.

If the author does somehow defy that here, I’d honestly be (pleasantly) shocked.

I can definitely see this going "as expected", but on the other hand, unlike Spirits' mom who had already died and been raised as an Amalareiks, Mai has at least so far been shown to be her usual, albeit broken self, simply using her ninja skills, so there may still be a way to save her.

Right after we have people complain that this is never going to go anywhere, we get this instead. :D
