LN spoiler Not fucking Lambert aaaaaahhhh I hate that guy and his story and his ship with all my heart

I am glad that we finally got to see the little slimey daughter I love her so much

Why the Lambert hate? I thought he was neat (although not developed enough)

I don't know but I think it's because of the fear/hate of incest thing. that's actually not a reason to hate him

WN Spoiler: He's not that bad compared to Manaria. Thankfully, the story gets better again after her arc. I still love this story overall, don't get me wrong. Highly recommend to people.

I love Manaria. She was really fun and her arc is one of the best ones for Rei and Claire's relationship.

How has it been 1.5 years since this ended already? I'm still crying

For me that doesn't quite work since I like world building but have never written stories. So I've made a couple magic systems that I classify based on how many rules they have.

My "definition" is actually a simplified explanation given by Brandon Sanderson in his online lectures, and he never precisely correlates the number of rules with system hardness, instead zooming in on their narrative functions. :-)

It's definitely a great way to look at them, but I always look at how the magic actually does and what it takes to use. And that's simply because I like making stuff like magic systems etc without ever tying them to naratives so I have the same thought process when looking at other people's creations.

Hard and soft magic systems are more of a scale than a binary and I'd say this meets somewhere in the middle

I'd say that rather than a binary or a scale, hard and soft magic systems are the difference between narrative functions of magic in the story: a hard MS is a tool for characters to clear obstacles and to resolve conflict, while a soft MS is a chaotic impulse that introduces a sense of wonder, of "what's going to happen next?" to the story. From this point of view (and without having read the WN), the magic system in this manga is neither hard, nor soft so far, but mostly just another attribute to characterize the protagonists by their affinities to different elements. Neither Rei, nor Claire utilize magic to advance their respective story arcs in any significant capacity (as they would if it truly were a hard MS), but neither is it a major source of new plot points (like a soft MS would).

I guess my point is that rather than sitting between hard and soft MS, this story's magic is neither in equal measure, as it could have been removed altogether without affecting the essential plot lines very much (again, with the caveats "so far" and "I haven't read the WN").

For me that doesn't quite work since I like world building but have never written stories. So I've made a couple magic systems that I classify based on how many rules they have.

Hang on a minute, if they're mock-battling each other, doesn't that mean our heroine loses either way? If she loses, she loses the bet and has to leave. If she wins, Lady Claire doesn't make the cut, whereas Rei DOES have to make the cut in order to win the bet. . . . wouldn't that mean they'd be separated?
Unless it's a round robin of some sort . . . I'm kind of assuming two rounds of fights, each eliminating half so that from 20 you go down to 5.

The terms for how someone makes the cut for the battle portion were never actually laid out, which is very tricky!

Regarding the magic system, this isn't your standard isekai so the magic system is secondary in the story. As such, it wasn't spelled out in detail in chapter one or early on. (spelling out the magic system via exposition is poor storytelling and a cheap shortcut anywho.) To add on to that, despite the author's intent through both arcs of IFTV to add clear and concrete rules to the system to make it a hard magic system, I think the magic system ends up being a soft magic system that can just adapt to the plot as needed.

Hard and soft magic systems are more of a scale than a binary and I'd say this meets somewhere in the middle

Rebellion’s ending is perfect but I’m interested in what they come up with. If they ruin Rebellion’s ending we can just pretend it doesn’t exist.

I wouldn't call Rebellion's ending "perfect", it left a lot unanswered; but yeah, there is a chance they ruin it which I'm very nervous about.

I think we’ll still have a poly end, but now it’s not looking like a slapdash “their lips touched and now they’re poly” anymore. There will probably come a time where Sayo and Rinna feel compelled to “compete” for Mei and when that arc comes to a climax that’ll be the moment Mei says “hold on who says it can’t be all three of us?” followed by some introspection and advice from out poly teachers

The teachers' relationship work because the three of them seem to love one another. Sayo and Rinna only love Mei though, and nothing Mei says will change that. I guess Mei could try to convince them to share instead of competing over her, but that would be a pretty shitty move, imo.

All in all, the poly route seem pretty unlikely, and that's probably for the better.

A poly ending doesn't just have to be a triangle where all three date each other. Also this is assuming that Sayo and Rinna wouldn't or couldn't fall for each other as the story progresses.

And if you ask me, I think proposing a V shaped relationship would be the best option for them (assuming of course that Mei falls for both). I certainly wouldn't call it a shitty move

We could have skipped mom and got the to kiss and confession without any loss of story. That said: Fricking finally! Now nobody has to pretend that they are friendship-kissing.

Sora's family situation was always in the air so I think getting that resolved is good, even if it was very awkwardly executed

Very interesting. For me Mei is the highlight of the series. She feels much more human than the other characters

Literally how though? I'm genuinely puzzled.
I could see how the author tries to make her seem hurt and having a difficulty expressing her true feelings (which some people might find cute) but she executes it very poorly. She should have made Mei show emotions from time to time, in subtle ways. (I know there have been some instances, but even these barely had any true passion/emotion)
She is a literal robot in this chapter. Yuzu has her b-day, and Mei's face is drawn in the same static expression all throughout the panels. It really feels like she doesn't gaf and always talks about work, while others constantly praise her for being so responsible (a level of which only a robot could reach tbh). Saburuta could even draw a little blush on her when she wasn't facing Yuzu in this chapter, to show her supposed hidden emotions but she didn't.

Mei acts exactly as I do irl. That's how. Like I literally don't know how to emote despite being full of emotions

We're speaking at cross purposes, then--you're discussing how you personally relate to the way the character acts, while I'm talking about how a professional author creates and maintains a coherent, consistent, and believable fictional character.

The Mei who whacked Yuzu in the butt with her umbrella prior to their Student Council election showdown in the main series is not at all the same character who is now quivering while clutching her teddy bear.

But this does feels like consistent characterisation for Mei, at least it does to me. And the reason it does is because I know that people can act like that irl and that makes it easy to see it in fiction instead of her seeming ooc.

She was always very timid and uncertain about her own feelings, but when it came to accomplishing a goal it doesn't really matter. She finds it easy to go on "autopilot" which makes her act differently than how she would if she relied on her own emotions instead. etc

At least that's how I see her. But I don't blame you for not seeing it my way. As far as I'm concerned we're both right and I don't have any energy to try to argue about it

Mei always spoils the mood for me. I'd rather read a friendship story between the rest of the characters without any romance. It'd be nice to read about Yuzu and Harumin doing stupid gyaru stuff like wearing their bikinis while studying, without Mei the Dementor around.

It pains me to agree, because as I’ve said several times here, Mei’s character was initially the most interesting to me because of her volatility (and her sexiness).

Now she’s only slightly more lively than her teddy bear.

Very interesting. For me Mei is the highlight of the series. She feels much more human than the other characters

puerile revenge fantasies do not particularly meet my criteria of worthwhile reading.

Okay, then don't read it. It certainly does fit mine so no complaints

I'm going to politely refrain from commenting on your literary taste

regardless, have fun not reading this I guess.
