Looks like I've caught up. Anywho, anybody care to discuss their least favorite movie? We've had many discussions over our favorites, but I have not seen many that have divulged their unfavorable views on certain movies. My least favorite movie is probably Birdman. There's also this movie I saw called Tru Love that was terribly annoying and contrived. Teen Witch is a bad movie but it is laughably enjoyable and so is The Room.

You mentioned birdman one time, and I remember saying smth like :

I don't like Iñárritu's works either. It seems like his movies are "oscar-winner" movie, and that they're made only for that purpose. I wouldn't call them bad all the same; I just find them boring and pretentious too.

My least favorite movies ? hmm

The Twilight movies
The Human centipede
Catwoman
Dragonball Evolution
And as surprising as it sounds, La vie d'adèle (known abroad as Blue Is the Warmest Colour). Seems like everyone is fond of this movie, but for some reason I couldn't overcome even the first hour. I tried to watch several times, but I just keep hating it no matter how hard I try lol. (like I hate everything from this film-maker.).

That said, why would the non-moe artnot fit here ? As beautiful as her art is, it is clearly unusual and quite unique.

That tag seems to be more fitting with the realistic/mature looking series. This one, while not your typical moe, is still very much in a cartoonish style.

Well, I can get on board with this. However the tag descritpion states :

"For series whose art is significantly different from what you'd call typical anime style of the modern era".

And if we stick to the definition, this story should belong in the non-moe category.

This doesn't look "realistic" or "mature" in term of art either and is tagged non-moe. It's kind of dark, but so is this story.
This still has kind of a cartoonish style, and is tagged non-moe.

I'm not trying to pick holes in what you say, I just want to have a better understanding of how you'd use tags; because the use of some tags still remains a mystery for me.

Make a tag suggestion, there's an icon at the upper right for it.

I checked her twitter too and well, I can't read japanese but I find her art and what she draws really interesting. You can feel what she's going / she's been through, it's gloomy but not creepy.. I won't even comment what the dude from 4chan said, just wish ppl like this would disappear.

. I also wish there were more yuri manga that are of the sci-fi/fantasy variety

I already mentioned it here, but you should read this. I'm pretty sure you're going to like it.

I kind of agee with Anon 's points too.

Mangaka like Morishima Akiko and Takamiya Jin are somewhat exceptions

Would add Amano Shuninta, Yamaji Ebine and Akiyama Haru too (well, in octave character aren't old, but it's really focused on adult life so..). EDIT : And Nishi Uko, how could I forget Nishi-sensei.
I don't get why most of yuri works have high-school setting either, tho it might be because as you said, it sells, and that's what japanese like. Non-japanese yuri manga tend to have rather a college or an adult life setting (like, FF, WDTFS, sunshine and bright star, mistress story..).
As far as I can tell, Japanse aren't usually fond of "deep" and too mature plot. That'd explain why anime like EVA or cowboy bebop were a flop.
I'm hoping for more Adult life too. That said, a high school setting doens't mean that it can't be deep and mature. Let's take for example my favorite yuri manga.

On the other hand, that's the rarity of these adult life yuri manga that makes them this enjoyable, at least from my point of view. I wouldn't like every story to be like this or like that, but I love these two yuri.

That said, I really hope we'll have more post-highschool yuri ... and more yuri aswell !

edit : forgot to mention Schindler's list and Carol. Include them as well

@ Utoptia
I bought Carol like the day it came out on DVD. I feel like it should've come home with at least one Oscar. Mad Max stole like half the awards anyway, so it'd only be fair. Plus, ever since Birdman won best picture, I've thought the Academy is the worst it's ever been. That movie is douchey pretentious bullshit.

Seems like you need a lesbian story to end in a tragic way to win an oscar. Carol deserved at least one, that's a fact.
Anyway, it doesn't affect my love of this movie.
And I agree with you on the last point. I don't like Iñárritu's works either. It seems like his movies are "oscar-winner" movie, and that they're made only for that purpose. I wouldn't call them bad all the same; I just find them boring and pretentious too.

Ikr, I would have given it a 10 out of 10, but the second arc could have been better. That said, Death note remains my favorite thriller along with Monster.

Talking about anime, what are your favorite openings ?

Risa

Looks like I missed your question as well.
What got me into anime ? hmm

2 years ago I was bored during my summer holidays and I watched Death note cuz I had nothing better to do. It re-lighted my anime flare and I'm kind of a big anime watcher since then.

That said, when I was a child I used to watch Yu-gi-oh on TV (the 1st gen) and I was absolutely in love with the serie and the game. ( I still am tho^^).

Not a lot of anime/manga characters have dogs. Chiyo from Azumanga Daioh is the only one that comes to mind... maybe dogs are not common/particularly expensive/difficult in Japan? I think taking on pet ownership (especially such a needy pup) just wasn't something the couple wanted to do at that time, and that's fine, it's a commitment that lasts for the life of the pet.

Kiba Inuzuka ? Also, if I'm right, a girl from a Nanzaki Iku work has a dog too.

I've seen everything from Lynch. Inland Empire is special, can't say if I liked it but it was interesting. It somehow reminded me of his first work, Eraserhead. (Probably his most disturbing and at the same time fascinating piece.)
I think Lynch's film are something you've got to watch several times, and you feel them before understanting (if that's even possible) and analyzing them. I personally watch a David Lynch's movie for the sensations and the emotions I'll have while watching it. There's no logic with Lynch, only a lyrical, oneiric and visual mesmerizing beauty that words can't explain.

John Carpenter

Did you know the name of the artist John K Peta comes from John carpenter, and K Peta is how a japanese would pronounce carpentar.

Zujin

EVA was made to be a "otaku trap" it begins like a basic mecha anime and then the show reflects and shows otakus the things that're wrong with em and their own problems (it may be a reason why japanese didn't like it when it got diffused. But from what I've heard, Anno was also quite depressed at that time just like someone said. Dunno if it has anything to do with the serie tho.

Anon

My favorites movies uh ?
Well, for me,the greatest movie of all time is Mulholland drive.
Then, not in order, I'd say : RQFD, LOTD, once upon a time in america, full metal jacket, [all tarantino films except jackie brown], black swan, ghost dog, dr strangelove, and PMMM : rebellion. That's a lot, and I can't order em, but those are my fav.

I am a fan of EVA (not the rebuild films though) and I'm not really a fan of End of Evangelion. I do like the the scene with Komm, Süsser Tod cause it's so crazy. (My favorite Hideaki Anno work is Aim for the Top! Gunbuster.)

I really didn't like EVA, even if I acknowledge its qualities and I'm aware that it's very well done and deep.
People usually praise it for its introspection, but it's precisely what bugged me. Not the introspection itself, but the character.

EVA is a legend among the anime, and it was something totally new and incredible back in 1996. It has inspired lots and lots of people and anime.

Shinji : the useless crybaby, coward, capricious. I wanted to punch my screen every time he talked...
Asuka :The tsundere without the cute side of the tsundere. Pretentious and arrogant as hell. She pissed me off so much I couldnt stand it.
Rei : The emotionless albinos that accomplishes her duty like a robot. As unbearable as the others two.

I had a hard time watching EVA cause of them. I HATE those personalities, that have been used again again and over again in various anime, and having to watch the strongest incarnations, the avatar of these personalities I hate so much was painful.

This aside, EVA is a great serie, a classic and a must-see. I just couldn't like it, but again, it's a cornerstone of the japanimation.

I really recommend you to read it then. I've read it in french, I don't think it's a bad thing if it's in Polish).

I also recommend to read the illustrated tolkien encyclopedia, by David Bay. It's a gem to someone interested in the universe, and it's very well done.
