I checked the painter, and he obviously does not have any issues about anatomy in his other work, so I guess there's really something fishy about "Grande Odalisque", and it could have been modified from the original idea.

Woman is probably closeted lesbian, ending in marriage with a guy who truly loves her. She is making everyone else happy, but not herself.
Younger woman sees it, so she asked "Why did you get married?" - (when you are not attracted to men).
Married woman is hurting herself having physical relations (sex) with her husband, and bruises what student girl sees, are those wounds. When she hears them "fighting" every night, she hears them having sex. - ("he is just clumsy" shows how she is not enjoying sex with him, having no pleasures at all, so younger girl called it "abusing", putting her on the spot).

After confession, woman rejected her, excusing herself being married.
At the end, we all can see her husband loves his wife, taking her to the hot spring, brightly smiling - (he is in love, for sure). But student girl knows it can't heal the "bruises", and it will sting more. But she can't do nothing. At least, she tried. It's up to married woman, her choice...

I like this manga, because it's a slap to readers how in reality soul hurting would look like physically (when eyes are open to see what is deeply hidden).

Who is picking up people must have great experience and read the body language so well. It's nothing randomly. It's the sense.

Anyway, there are people who does not want emotional attachment (me with guys). But with girls I always wanted emotional connection. So I can understand the character, somehow. She knows what she's doing. Consciously or not, she is making right choices regarding situation.

She picked up "the guy" on impulse, seeing "him" with a cat. She probably wanted to go to the bar, but she changed her mind, seeing "the sign" (if guy was gentle with a cat, and cat liked his touch, she simply knew he will be greater choice than someone from the bar). It was not an "accidental" pick up, even if it seems to be. Later, in hotel, she was telling it...

Back to manga, here we have exceptional situation between physically forming a child, and spiritually transforming that "previous child of the body" into potential lover under unknown (or unclear) circumstances.
It's very complex subject, beyond understanding. For complete understanding, one must understand what are differences between procreation (physical) and creation (spiritual).
In manga, we have one of the most complicated situation, a mixture of both. And author did not reveal yet everything.
I don't expect wide population to understand my words, I'm talking about the highest principles of life. I don't have matches among people to talk about it, for now. Certain thing is, Ayako-Asuka have sexual attraction between them, and tension which leads to fulfillment (whatever reasons for attraction could be, I gave my points of view already not caring what anyone else thinks about it, it's just my personal opinion).
If Ayako truly "formed" Asuka into "child forever in mother's womb", she should take responsibility for Asuka and give her "another kind of birth". It's like, their relation mother-daughter is vague past, it already elevated to lovers, but not yet consciously fulfilled.
(they were related as mother-daughter in "past life", it's still present, but something happened with both of them what changed their starting point (mother-daughter) into something else(potential lovers). Sexual energies are spiritual thing, physical is just manifestation.

am intrigued by what "crime" means in this story

Probably Ayako is thinking about misusing her position , working in pharmacy (unlimited access to meds and drugs). She isn't aware what happened under influence of drugs, so she could not address anything else as a crime...Except putting child-Asuka into sleep, without any other intention (so, she thinks she neglected her child in these occasions).
Then she took her time to chill and relax by herself (every parent can't wait the moment when children are sleeping, finally), but she does not know what exactly her relaxation was under the drugs, obviously. And, she is working single mother who truly needs time for chilling from everything. And she has found her way to do it when her child is sleeping.

Manga as manga, is not dark, is very cute and sexy, but contains the elements about subconsciousness, like the "dark side of the moon", and how it reflects in reality, what is superinteresting and very deep observation of some possible behavior (like desires toward something or someone, including incest in this case and how circumstances in life can influence on personalities and behavior, even when actual persons are not aware about it ).

I'm very curious how author will resolve this "mess " about their dark past, wishing Ayako and Asuka happy awakening. They should do it with consent, this time (?) Maybe it will set them free? Let's see what author will do, I have very high expectations, this manga is precious

I would not judge Ayako, even if it's true that she unconsciously committed a sexual crime with minor Asuka (crime is totally unintentional, if crime exists in this case) . She raised her child properly, and gave her best as a single mother. Both of them are victims of unhappy circumstances. I love them both. Please author, however dark is their past, make them happy.
