Go ahead, I might like it.

This list has been done by just randomly picking up titles from my "follows" on Batoto in like an hour, nothing too fancy really. Some information ( like volume length may be incorrect because this small list has been done a few months ago )

Hopefully it's going to come out alright on this reader. Also this deals in pretty "known" titles since it was my pretty much "Introduction to different demographic/genre for dummies". So it's quite possible a bunch of you are at least familiar with a lot of them. Still, I worked one long hour to do this a while back, so might as well post it again!

Please excuse the horrible English, it being a third tongue, it's sort of hard to be all nice-like and informative with the language.

Kiba no Tabishounin - The Arms Peddler
Genre : Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
Demographic : Seinen
Size : 6 Volumes ( Ongoing and fully available online )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=53101

Art : I love the art really, very nice usage of black tones and overall top art.

Story : Nuclear Winter happened, MC is a little kid that’s been saved by beautiful and ass kicking woman. It’s really generic shounen with a bit more brutality, honestly It’s just mentioned here because I love kick ass women and good art. The only reason this is seinen is because of the gore and the nudity at some point in the story. Consider this the only “entry level” manga of my this list.

All-Rounder Meguru
Genre : Sports, Martial Arts
Demographic : Seinen
Size : 13 Volumes ( Ongoing and available online up to Volume 9 )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=38777

WARNING : Graphic Nudity ( although it’s mostly used for comedic purposes )

Art : Endo Hiroki’s art is very realistic in body proportion and this really shines in this manga

Story : Pretty straight-forward story, high school student who's done Karate who is now moving towards MMA. He’s a bit of a doofus but he’s hard working. What really makes this manga shine is the very realistic approach to MMA and fighting in general. If you want something a little less crazy with your martial arts manga, this is a good one.

Eden - It's an Endless World!
Genre : Psychological, Sci-Fi, Tragedy
Demographic : Seinen
Size : 18 Volumes ( Complete and fully available online )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=930

WARNING :
Graphic Nudity ( Multiple cases of Sexual Intercourse, rape, prostitution )
Graphic Violence ( Shit happens, people die )

Art : This is the previous work of Endo Hiroki ( All Rounder Meguru ).

Story : This is pretty much a Saga. Lots of time skips, lots of people Dying ( No one is safe, you have been warned, don’t come crying when all your favourites characters are dead ).

Guns, androids, organized crime, aliens, the end of the world. This manga has it all. From all this chaos also comes some reflection of the human condition. I highly recommend this work, even if it can be frustrating at times.

The Friendly Winter
Genre : Webtoon, Slice of Life, Drama
Size : 64 Chapters ( Complete and fully available online )
MU Link : https://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=82158

Art : Like most webtoons, it is in colour rather than black and white. The art is pretty decent and the colour choice makes this work pretty.

Story : I’m going to plug in the description from MU

Quote:
A 19 year old girl with a rare growth disorder that leaves her in the body of a small child meets a boy with a mental disorder, who has the mind of a small boy in a 17 year olds body. A Friendly Winter shares with us the endearing story of their day-to-day lives, joys and tribulations.

This pretty much explains it, expect sadness, expect joy, expect tears. This webtoon is both heart warming and heart wrenching at times.

Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro
Genre(s) : Mystery, Comedy, Supernatural
Demographic : Shonen
Size : 23 Volumes ( Completed and available in English online )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=824

Art : The art is a bit weak and looks more dated than it actually is, but for this kind of Manga it’s fine. There’s some great « demonic » panels every now and again when he uses his powers.

Story : This is your typical episodic murder case solving manga with a demonic twist to it. A lot of comedic moments between the demon and his useless high school girl sidekick.

Nobugana no Chef
Genre : Cooking, Historical, Drama
Demographic : Seinen
Size : 9 Volumes ( ongoing and 7 volumes available online )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=64038

Art : Art is pretty good, especially when the MC is cooking, lots of power in those pages.

Story : A chef time gets thrown back to the Sengoku Era (1467 – c. 1573) and becomes the Chef for Oda Nobugana while he’s trying to unite Japan. Lots of tense moments as he cooks for many important figure of the time, at the same time he’s lost his memories of himself. But his knowledge of history is still intact, although he hesitates to do something too dramatic, because that would change the future. All and all, MC is smart and it’s pleasure seeing evolve in an unfamiliar era.

Berserk
Genre : Action, Adventure, Supernatural
Demographic : Seinen
Size : 37 Volumes ( Ongoing and fully available online )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=88

WARNING :

Graphic Nudity ( instances of rape ( male rape as well ), corpse being displayed naked after execution, etc )
Graphic Violence : Lots of blood and things being cut into smaller pieces.

Art : Although the first few volumes are a bit Shaky ( this was back in 88’ folks ) this manga is amongst the top detailed art in the manga industry later on ( post-eclipse arc ).

Story : Without spoiling too much, the MC is a big badass with a big sword on a quest for revenge. And he kicks a lot of demons ass. Set in a medieval world with fantasy elements ( fairies, demons etc… ). If you want a dark action-adventure Saga, this is pretty much it.

Sakamoto desu ga ?
Genre : Comedy, School Life, Slice of Life
Demoraphic : Seinen
Size : 2 Volumes ( Ongoing, about ¾ of it available online )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=77748

Art : Pretty good.

Story : Let’s just say this is the story of the most incredible being there ever was. You’d be a fool not to read this.

Horimiya
Genre : Romance, School Life, Slice of Life
Demographic : Shounen
Size : 5 Volumes ( ongoing and fully available online )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=70263

Art : Pretty clean art, typical for a sweet romance story like this one.

Story : From MU
Quote:
Hori is your average teenage girl... who has a side she wants no one else to ever find out about. Then there's her classmate Miyamura, your average glasses-wearing boy in school and a totally different person out. When the two meet unexpectedly, they discover each others' secrets and develop an unexpected friendship.

That’s pretty much it, it’s 2 people learning more about each other and spending time together, and learning to appreciate one another. No drama, no serious love rivals. Just some sweet and comedic moments.

Innocent
Genre : Drama, Historical, Psychological
Demographic : Seinen
Size : 4 Volumes ( Ongoing and 3 volumes available online )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=92248

Warning : Alternative Sexuality ( Main character has a non-platonic relationship with another boy for some time )

Art : Very visceral and realistic art that accentuate the psychological aspect of this work

Story : The story is set in Revolutionary France and the MC is from a family of executioner, he’s forced into the position by his father and family. But he’s a kind soul, so this is something that’s very taxing to do for him. Because of his occupation, he’s scorned by the rest of society, which further alienate him. The story is really about his own struggle in life and the goal he set for himself ( to abolish executions ). This doesn’t look like much at first, but the ride is pretty intense. I strongly suggest everyone give this a try, even with the "lul homo" warning.

REAL
Genre : Sports, Drama, Psychological
Demographic : Seinen
Size : 13 Volumes ( ongoing, fully available online )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=142

Art : Great art that comes alive and really able to communicate what the characters feel and experience.

Story : From MU:
Quote:
The story revolves around three teenagers with a desire to play basketball. Nomiya, being a high school dropout, has no future in his life. Engulfed by the guilt of crippling a girl in a traffic accident where he invited her on a bike ride finds himself in a deep predicament. Togawa, a former talented sprinter who once strove to become the best in Japan now putting his all in wheelchair basketball finds it hard to deal with the disinterest and psyche of his own team mates. Takahashi, once a popular and arrogant team leader, an honour student, a self proclaimed elite now finds himself being unable to move from the chest down.

You’ve read correctly, a lot of the basketball matches in this manga will be in the wheelchair format.

A view into a sport that most people don’t see often. Also dives into the mind of those who are seemingly lost everything after losing uses of their legs. A very good read for those who want a more serious approach to a sport manga and life. This is really such a sport manga as it is a coming of age story.

7 Seeds
Genre : Adventure, Sci-Fi, Romance
Demographic : Josei
Size : 26 Volumes ( ongoing, almost fully available online few chapters missing )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=548

Art : Artist is a bit older than most, so the art is very 90s Shoujo-esque. It takes a bit to get used to but it grows on you.

Story : Post-apocalyptic world in which 5 teams of 7 were frozen and then un-frozen X years in the future in a world devoid of human life. The main protagonist is a pretty ferocious girl, but she isn’t dumb mind you. She’s also calm and composed. Although, she’s not the only character Point of view you’ll see. This story is really about survival, although there’s a few times where the mystery surrounding the world they live in is explained a bit. This, with another manga, are my favourite post-apoc mangas ( I'll post the other one at a later date ).

Magician
Genre: Webtoon, Adventure, Fantasy
Size : 300+ Chapters ( ongoing, almost fully available online aside a few chapters )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=54097

Art : The art is a bit rough especially the first 50ish chapters. Again, as most webtoon this is in full colour rather than black and white.

Story : Two kids join this Immortal magician ( hence the title ) and travel the world. Good ol’ adventure with a cart and a horse, stopping by towns and doing adventure things. There's sword fighting, magic, dragons. Your typical DnD shit.

Voila, this used to be 15 but 2 titles were already on the reader so I removed them.

I would read SnK, but that's the sort of manga I'd just avoid reading lol. I mean, how can you get attached to the character's in the story if they're probably gonna die soon.

"Ho hi, I'm a new character, yoroshiku!"
Next chapter, they're impaled on a wall or get munched. :(

Honestly, I shy away from reading SnK for much the same reason as I avoid One Piece. It's WAY too heavy an investment. I did read from the beginning up to the end of the first battle with the female titan, and by that point I was overwhelmed by the bleakness of it all and the frequent tragedy. To go through that again, twice over in terms of length by now, no way I can handle that.

But that's really the only good about it! I can understand, if you're all about the fluffy and the vanilla, sort of hard to digest anything else.

Outside of the yuris here i... Read a lot of crap, especially stuff by Seo Kouji.

Oh, what are you doing... A lot of times I feel like making detailed list of titles with my opinion and genre on it, just for the folks that seem to read a lot of stuff they shouldn't read. There's just too much content in all demographics that people can waste their time on.

I do have a list of 12-15(?) titles with a brief explanation, genre tags, length, MU link and my take on it. But I sort have to format it another way because it doesn't really insert itself in this forum easily right now. That and I probably have to edit titles that have "Warning : Rape, prostitution, many character deaths, etc..." in them. I don't think this the crowd for this kind of stuff.

"One day, P*NIS arrives and throws the orderly rhythm of Mihama off balance. Is P*NIS what the girls need to hold of their lives once more, or will the weight of their pasts prove too steep a wall to overcome? Or is P*NIS' past even heavier than any of the others? Like, fo reelz?"

Oh, and there's a hint about he might be the most unfortunate of them all? The author must be stealing idea from my fantasy diary, I can totally relate to the protagonist!!!1!

I'm so mad at this series that I won't bother making any sense to you guys.

Well, he's pretty unfortunate, but he's a certified badass™.

Well with this anime season thread and gaming general thread, I'd figure this the next logical step. I mean, we're all manga fans in here? From series you just fell in love with, to long time favourites, just post it guys!

One of these days I'll make a list of "great/good reads" but not today!

So I'm going to just open this thread with... A sneak peek of the upcoming Shingeki no Kyojin ( Attack on Titan ) chapter.

So I'm warning you guys, don't click the spoilered link if you are not prepared to witness the information.

DON'T CLICK IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GET SPOILED! There's an image plus text on the second line.

I find emulation is hit or miss, honestly. I managed to play the entirety of Skyrim through Wine though, and played Civ V until they came out with a port earlier this year.

Few years ago my desktop decided to not play nice and since I was broke I was left with a macbook for some time, there's always a way to play stuff, just a question of will and patience! There's definitely an incredible amount of titles now so that's cool.

Emulation is cool though... SNES, NES, PSX etc, etc... All dem games.

Although like I said, there are enough really good games coming and already out that I've got plenty to play already.

Funny you should say that, I think there's not enough! Back in 2012 I quit MMOs for good and stopped playing the private WoW server I was playing at the time and suddenly I had so much time with so little to do!
Two years later and after my "let's play as much games as possible, I missed a lot" spree I'm always searching for more of them.

I really wish I could play some of those under Linux though (well, I've got Shadowrun Returns).

Using a system that has low percentage of users ( compared to Windows ) has always been such a detriment to gaming, although with WINE and a myriad of other options, provided you are a bit savvy ( which if you're using Linux, you should be in the first place ) you can get something going.

I know there's a port coming soonish for Transistor and Divinity: Original Sin (hopefully by the end of the year?), but I've got no such hopes for Child of Light.

D:OS Is a solid 8.5 for me, in my heart it's a 9.0ish but there's just a few bugs, UI clunkiness and a few other things ( pacing issues )that just stops it short of being an awesomeomfgbbqx game. Luckily for me, I still play old RPGs so I'm used to some degree of "unpolishness" but for newer gamers this can be a big turn-off.
All in all, a great game that mixes the old and the new.

There's been a resurgence(upcoming) of RPGs on all platforms and I'm happy for it.
Next month is Dragon Age:Cisquisition, let's just hope devs have spent half the time on their game as they spent on their dating sim policies ( heh ). This game will probably be the last chance I'm giving to bioware/EA games ( I'm such a masochist ).

If all goes well, I'll have Project Eternity coupled with The Witcher 3 in Q1 2015 and then those will probably last me enough till Torment: Tides of Numenera in Q4 2015 ( again if it's released as scheduled ).

And then maybe FFXV boys trek in the wilderness will be released? Who knows really.

I'm reminded of George Carlin's famed line, "Fussy eater" is a euphemism for "big pain in the ass"

Well I eat pretty much anything, but I'll be damned if I can't choose what I eat in my own household just because other people say you need to eat X at Y time. My home, my rules.

Cross Ange is going to be the trainwreck of the season.

Wow, seriously. I just finished watching the first episode myself. If they are actually setting up for a het end I can only describe this series as hilarious(in the "sometimes I actually wish this world would go to hell" sense)ly offensive. The sight of that brown-haired Kira-lookalike faggot makes me feel like I wanna puke.

It's something else I tell you... If you think It's just about that Kira "Jesus" Yamato look-a-like... Think again, http://i.imgur.com/dnsDC4V.jpg

Fukuda is trolling everyone I swear.

anti-feminist at first ep sigh..
dropped.

Anti-feminist in what respect? Most people focus on the last scene, and obviously the one meant to be shocking would probably the one most people focus on ( btw the blood isn't hers ).

But let's look at other things.
That scene where they take the baby "Yo it's kay, you can make a new one, just try not to make a monster next time" Like, are you foreal here?

Then there's the time where the Queen dies, really no one seem to care. Move along folks, nothing is happening here. Her siscon rapist in the making brother proclaim himself leader now, people are like... The family was harbouring a Norma and all, let's not doubt our new overlord!

What can I say... These people are not being like normal human beings at all. I'd say this show is really anti-humanity.

A lot of shows are turning out to be not so good this season, I might just watch this for the ride.

Two things about that. One, we're talking about a culture that invests a great deal more into New Year's traditions than much of the west does into things like Christmas dinner. Indeed, it's a culture for which tradition is a very immediate and important thing.

The other is that I see the soba being used as a metaphor, or at least an element Japanese readers would recognize and say "hey, I get an idea of what's being suggested here" without being too obvious. So it doesn't matter if everyone does it, it matters if it's something often associated with family on New Year's.

I was already almost convinced right after I did my first post ( I don't edit my posts even when I feel they're dumb seconds after I post it ) but now I'm 100% convinced that you're right. My other post was just me subtly ranting about how it's dumb to eat food that you dislike just because it's tradition. I do know that being a picky eater is somewhat more frown upon over there.

Remember that Keiko was never close with her family, and doesn't seem to have any good memories at all of her parents.

This true, but in my experience even those families which kids don't have fond memories of still do the whole holiday thing. But maybe that is the case, I mean I don't think we've seen her dad even mentioned once. Too busy doing that salaryman thing I guess.

From my admittedly brief reading on the subject, it appears New Year's soba is a common thing for families. Perhaps someone with a bit more knowledge of Japanese culture could weigh in?

It's quite possible, but Isn't really relevant to all families.

Thanksgiving all about the turkey for millions upon millions of Canadians/Americans. But in my family this is not the case.
Reason is pretty simple, why would you eat inferior dry meat that you need a bucket full of gravy to even eat the thing?

Looking at it again, I'm reminded of something that occurred to me when first reading this chapter. Isn't the soba-on-New-Year's thing a metaphor for how each of them relates to their families? Ran is clearly fine with hers and has a tradition of doing things like soba on New Year's, where Keiko is just the opposite. I think the "just a little something" is Ran being happy that she's giving that family warmth to Keiko, who she clearly cares deeply about and wants to make happy. Even if they're not girlfriends (yet!), in some small way they're family.

It could be, but I think it's more likely that they just don't eat it for that occasion.
Every family has THE dish they always do for thanksgiving, christmas, etc...

"The world isn't square" doesn't work as well in English as it does in Japanese, that was a bad translation I'm sure most people didn't get the meaning.

Something about Bell's flank not working on her right? Had to go through some serious analysis to come to that

Close! Really what it means is that the world isn't black and white.

This is happy Tomino though, depressed Tomino would've already kill about 20 innocent bystanders in episode 2

Happy Tomino doesn't stay long, Bell-kun won't have that shit eating grin on his face for much longer, mark my words.

Oh, and for those of you who were interested in G-Reco, I hope you like clunky, expostion-heavy dialogue, because that's what you're getting.

Tomino and his unorthodox dialogues...

Sasuga Tomino
I'm kinda thrown off by the choppy animation, i wonder if it's the questionable production value that can't afford even a opening or if it's trying to mimic 90's animation, it can still pick up it's pace though so there's a potential there G-Self is my waifu though

It's on purpose, Tomino is old and can't into new stuff. Compared to today stuff it's clunky, zooms are awful and it's hectic but that was always how he did things. Not having inbetween animation makes these slapstick style stuff ( like the classic tomino slap in Ep 1 ) better.

I liked the Turn-A reference when he threw the arms in the air to test the G-Self

We already know that annoying girl that damaged his future waifu's beautiful butt is going to lose, and considering it's Tomino she's probably going to die a horrible death as well lul.

Yoshida's character designs are impressive as always, and I like the old style lines thrown in there as well. I hate the current void and no texture faces of the current animes.

"The world isn't square" doesn't work as well in English as it does in Japanese, that was a bad translation I'm sure most people didn't get the meaning.

Some girl is a lesbian. She's also the devil. That's pretty much the definition of "treating a character horribly," no?

Her being a lesbian as nothing to do with her being an asshole. You can be a bad person and be straight. I'd say my definition of "treating a character horribly" is more like... A good person and they get all the bad stuff happening to them.

For example the typical mecha heroine who is bound to be killed for the sake of the MC getting mad and progressing as a character, or the loser in a love triangle that not only loses his/her love interest but really get shafted in every possible way and quite possibly die a "dog's death".

To be fair, I've dropped the show quite early so I don't know what ultimately happened with all the love polygon action on the show. I don't really like P.A. Works because they always do the same "m-muh drama n relationship" especially when it's Okada Mari ( not this time ) doing the scripts and all.

Maybe it's because I'm older and can't really stand the whole "were teenagers in love and were going to go full retard".

This isn't about the loli. It's about how her girlfriend is no longer dependant on her anymore. She mourns the time where her lover needed comfort from her.

It wouldn't matter if she was small or tall, she's all grown up. People "grow" up at different pace, it's just happens to be that she grew both ways in high school and so the image we see is the middle school one, that happens to be small.
