I'm mostly struck by what seems to be a massive tone shift.

Up until now, the series' only portrayal of combat was a bunch of townspeople throwing food at each other. Suddenly, we get hints that Hakumei is an ex-paramilitary demolitions expert, see members of her old company packing actual swords and rifles, and learn her old boss built that company by "converting" a band of thieves that tried to immolate her.

Well, we did get very close to life-threatening combat in this scene from much earlier in the series. I feel like Hakumei's behavior in it will be given some very interesting context with the upcoming chapters. It's probably more than coincidence that that earlier encounter is followed by Hakumei's introductory mention of Emerald's caravan...

I know that I definitely wouldn't give boy!Mimika anywhere near as much sympathy as I give actual!Mimika, but I do have to (reluctantly) agree that the story would still be just as good. I would not touch such a story with a ten-foot pole...

I think the author was aware of this on some level and the creation of the story as yuri was purposeful. It's disarming. You think "Oh, Mimika isn't a boy so there's no (or just less) potential for harmful, predatory behavior here." You let the story play out, and Ejima gets to elaborate on the relationship and its implications.

I definitely fell for it. I don't think I would've gotten to this point with the het version.

I would certainly be disgusted to a certain extent if actual!Mimika crossed the line, but if male!Mimika did that, I would drop the series then and there. If actual!Mimika did that, I'd most likely continue onward and still support her.

I'd stop supporting the relationship, but I'd continue reading as long as Ejima can continue creating an interesting story around it.

That's why I'm so hung up on this. If Mimika had the same character, made the same decisions, and simply had her gender flipped, I would still think it's an incredibly compelling story. Hell, I'd still support his relationship with Yuzumori as it currently stands. But that support would crumble the moment he crosses the line, and I put the same onus on female Mimika.

A lot of people rooting for the story now, the ones egging on a sexual encounter between the main couple, would ever give boy!Mimika a drop of sympathy.

I've never played or even seen the game itself, so it took me awhile to figure out the punchline.

I can only drink the kind of coffee that's so heavily chocolate flavored it's basically chocolate milk too.

Also if this was het and Mimika a guy, wouldn't it make things more awkward when he would want to touch Yuzumiri, just like Mimika feels now?

This is the litmus test I use for yuri. If the protagonist (or love interest) were male, would I still agree with their decisions? Would I still be interested in what they're doing? Would it still be a good story?

Perfectly logical career choice. She's involved in a lot of shipping, and I can easily imagine her doing a lot of receiving.

Still not a fan of Shanghai being human-sized. I prefer the difficulties presented by a massive size gap.

I can see that. But it's very easy to imagine a narrative based on Alice constructing a human-sized body for Shanghai and finding a way to transfer her "soul" into it.

Lots of sex, very little story.

I take exception to the assessment that Comaku is incapable of writing stories. Is My Hobby Weird? wasn't particularly deep storytelling, but the narrative structure was very much there and mostly coherent. I Want to Be Your Kind of Girl is also passable as a story, though it's less developed than the former. The bonus chapter of Hobby was similar to this: straight up porn with very little in the way of narrative. But at least that didn't have have any pretense.

Their (English translated) ouvre isn't large enough to make a definitive judgement, but Comaku seems to have issues with pacing in shorter formats. He or she doesn't know how to compose story development and erotica within a very small space, and in that situation foregoes the former for the sake of the latter. This series had the setup for a narrative arc, but jumped straight from the exposition to the resolution in the last chapter.

The sex was all there, and if that's all you wanted as a reader then you can walk away from this fairly satisfied. But if you were expecting a story - even a simple one - then it's lacking. I can't blame you if you're part of the latter group, as the series seemed to be building up exposition and conflict in the first two chapters, then abruptly ends everything in the third.

I liked this a lot. I read the protagonist as sexual but aromantic and that's something you don't normally see in yuri stuff?

This was the main redeeming quality for me. The main character was a relatively novel take on the harem protagonist role. She's actually very interesting: an aromantic, polyamorous, nonexclusive lead with a Buddhist underpinning that manages to pull off the "I choose every girl" route without making it skeevy.

On the other side, the series falls into the ruts of the genre when it fails to develop any of the other characters. The boss started out with some, and the second chapter made me think there'd be some development there. But by the end she's been homogenized into the harem as her only defining trait is her attraction to the protagonist.
