Excel Saga. It is completely different from the manga. They simply took the rough look of the characters and the general setting and went in an entirely different direction.

The anime isn't bad as a crazy slapstick comedy, but it is completely different from the manga I love so much.

All these people having more interesting things happen to them in high school, than I've had happen to me my entire life...

While they're both really tall, and have the same family name, that family name is used so rarely in the story, and Yamada is a suuuuper common name, so I have to think that the reader is indeed intended to be surprised.
