I moved Your Everything to this collection, but does anyone have any info on the remaining story?

At this point, this current arc has been going on for over half the total chapters if you count the start of it as Ai showing up.

Though I really wish ninjutsu in this setting had any kind of definitive rules, because it just comes across as plot magic.

At least it's consistent in a sense, given how the whole "magic ninjas" thing came completely out of the left field

Does this mean the magic ninja motif pivot was really sustainable for the series while the smaller, hero stories were not so popular?

It for sure has more the CGDQT playful gay feel to it than anything too serious but it is gay as hell... As Eggnsrice mentioned it is gayer than a fair few series marked as yuri as well, "Futari Escape" being a good example (which I love, and thank you knight heron for it)

But Futari Escape is tagged subtext. Which is another hard call because all the non-story material (single page illustrations, editor blurbs) make it seem like they're a couple, sleep in the same bed, etc.

I can arbitrate though. Who wants more tags!

Day ??? of asking for a Go For It, Nakamura! tag.

Linking a parody to its reference doujin tag isn't generally how those tags work. That would necessitate widespread use of the Jojo's tag for consistency, and then every other linkable parody and reference. I'm not the one to make that call, but I am all in on gratuitous use of the Jojo's tag

Edit: I'm dead wrong, that's exactly how those tags work. Suwakoto is tagged with both touhou and yotsubato, that love live nozonico image referencing Citrus is tagged with both as well. Following that, I have a new question. Should we be tagging something like this as watamote and Jojo's? (There are similar untagged instances with Sakura Trick, Azumanga Daioh, and more.)

And believe me, Altair is not a person to back down from personal slights if he considers them as such.

This is true. It's something I'm working on.

Don't worry everyone, smallpox is one slip of an abandoned Soviet bio facility from being back on the scene! Those pigs will come in handy again one day

Kurumi and Ruriko live in a strange parallel universe where not only is same-sex marriage legal in Japan, but people do not spend all day everyday texting friends and lovers basically every thought that pops into their heads

This kills a level of suspension of disbelief for me in most media. I always wonder what media would look like if it was more accurate on this depiction. Even if not everyone does this all the time, no media seems to capture our relationship to technology and even including the way they're an extension of our minds authentically in small ways would dramatically alter most media. It's absence in fiction and non fiction is very, very weird

It's a bit like arguing how ridiculous it would be to write a story about a guy who got mauled by a bear because it is such an admittedly rare and improbable event. It doesn't change the fact people do in fact get mauled by bears and thus it's a perfectly logical premise for a story.

Oh fuck. Now I want a video of Werner Herzog watching Marimite and just appearing horrified at how slowly everything is moving yet how dramatic every given moment is

We need a Werner Herzog yuri. Pre-Fitzcarraldo. Though maybe Two Spirals or Restart from Zero are those yuri

Honestly, the bully is the most interesting part of this for me. I don't really have patience for the MC puttering around and such.

Also it's implied the bully pushed MC's crush, right?

Yeah, I think you're right. It appears set up to look like a suicide, but since she goes up there often enough then the bully probably did it. Which could make for an interesting story if MC figures this out and realizes she has to get on good terms with the bully to save Suyeon.

Is nobody going to mention that truck-kun got the MC before the ground could?

One somewhat horrifying aspect is that MC still appears to have the suicidal tendencies from her 29 year old self judging by her walk to the roof mirroring her stair climb in the wedding dress.

Dynasty pro tip: don't check for yuri on the home page. Get all your yuri from the recently added page so you don't miss any. You might catch a batch upload like this, but you'll miss oneshots that are a few days old

Direct translation is for the birds. In a space where we have no editors to tell us not to get too creative, no investors wanting safe and proven production methods to get returns, and no need to worry that our readers won't be coming back (and if they don't, so what?), we continue to flatten character voices, blunt tone, produce unnatural dialogue, and remove characterization in service to finding the technically best way to do things. We do not seek to recreate the original reading experience, which is integral in translating the art on the whole. The reason some manga companies have followed suit lately is because this style doesn't take risks and is something they can get from the lowest paid contractors in an industry of underpaid translators. Translations here will vary in exactly where they fall, but scanlation always seems to trend toward awkward, dull, and flat dialogue and a preference for technical accuracy or Rube Goldberg constructions to impart understanding at the expense vibrant, creative, and colorful storytelling reminiscent of the original. But well the readers are generally Japan hobbyists over avid fiction consumers, so no harm no foul.

Still, Stan's translations are a rarity and a blessing in our circles. We squander our creative freedom, and that's my TED Talk.

Question! Chapter 33 is Kurokawa's incorrect perception of Fujishiro, right? Wasn't the whole eyebrows thing a misunderstanding where Fujishiro saw the potential in Kurokawa and muttered the wrong thing at the wrong time? See eyebrow day: https://dynasty-scans.com/chapters/useless_princesses_ch04#7

Is the point of the chapter that Fujishiro is totally overestimated?

Yuru Yuri (unintended) cameo in Chapter 1.

\A-kkari~n/

With Akari appearing later in this very issue of Yuri Hime, I'd say the cameo was extra intentional. (Keep an eye out for that one, chapter 159!)

So it's just SSE being shit like usual. This is why I just bought the Japanese novel instead of the English one (even though I can't read Japanese).

That's not what I was saying at all. It's that this was a fairly routine cut (with unintended consequences) likely produced by the culture of fear around publishing right now. There's also still that weird expectation fans have for direct translations.

The electronic version was updated and any new prints will have the cuts back in them. Not sure how to actually acquire a later edition

I’m also curious about Chiyo’s life, did she actually fall for a man and raise a family because she wanted to? Or was she just doing so because of the era she lived in? She seemed happy enough so I’ll hope it was the former.

I think the argument can be either way. The text is clear she's a lesbian, and I think she found happiness for herself. But the lack of interactions with her husband in the montage and presence of the kids instead would seem to say that's where she found her happiness. On the other hand, the way she was staring at that kitchen knife in the montage was pretty ambiguous and ominous. The final thought we're left with is that she was always smiling, so the knife and husband aside, it sounds like she enjoyed her life.

What is this "cultural phenomenon" you speak of? Thats sounds really interesting, could you give me some information on it? If its offensive that's fine, different culturals have elements that can seem offensive or strange to our culture, but I would still like to learn about them.

It's not all that different. The basic idea, which might not even happen in the manga, is that Rei has intentionally adopted a caricature of being gay that mimics entertainers on TV. The gay person that is the butt of every joke due to their goofy and eccentric personality might be a bit more familiar. Apparently there is a specific archetype this passage refers to that western readers wouldn't recognize. Hence it getting cut. Loosely, Rei wants to be able to get closer to women she's interested in, but when they find out she is a lesbian, they distance themselves entirely. So she adopts the caricature that so many people have been complaining about in this thread, which she openly admits reproduces homophobia, because there's not really anything else she can do but laugh at herself and her situation and try not to be alienated from those she loves.

It really does suck that it was cut since Rei never goes back and struggles with, revisits, or overcomes this aspect of herself. Here are the exact text changes:

the morning glory they planted in the garden is a big hint. in flower langage it is a duality to love and mortality and for love in vain.

Kase-san also opened with morning glories and went in a very positive direction. Hanakotoba says on its wiki entry that morning glories are more a symbol of an intentional, deliberate promise. I think the flower is meant to be hopeful here in defiance of Shizuka's disregard for the two months it will take to bloom.

That opening page of this series is something though. So the story is in the past and it seems like Shizuka is writing the love story novel?

I'm about a fourth of the way through the novel, to where Rei is more or less forced into commitment despite her fear and quiet despair over the prospect of loving without reciprocation. The novel is actually a very powerful literary achievement. It's literature. It's not only yuri as entertainment, it is about yuri and the courage it takes to love in a hostile world. All the fun stuff is just icing.

Be warned, if you're reading the official release, apparently certain paragraphs which delved deeper into Rei's thoughts and explored her behavior in more detail, adding important depth to her character, were removed during the editing phase for Heaven only knows what reason.

I wonder about those paragraphs. I get why they were cut (a Japanese cultural phenomenon that seems hella offensive or confusing to western readers was cut and so was a paragraph that went along with it which happened to show that Rei's behavior is a coping mechanism), but I wouldn't be surprised if this crucial detail isn't in the manga adaptation either. And while I adore this series to bits, from the Xenogears to the romance to the intrigue, literature it ain't. Your canonical works of "high fiction" or "literary fiction," which is what people consider literature over your churned out fiction, use imagery, heavy symbolism, figurative language, patterns, and metaphors at least. In the manga world, this would be Our Dreams at Dusk. Your average novel has exposition, clearly distinguished narrators, intentional staging, descriptions of actions and events, and frequent character introspection. Light novels are more like scripts for a play with all of that cut out in favor of dialogue and light exposition (though this varies a bit depending on the author).

That the whole reasoning for how Rei approaches Claire being a nihilistic response to her own experiences as a lesbian in the 21st century is off-handedly mentioned once and can be totally removed from the story with an accidental omission underscores that. Which does not diminish how awesome this work is as a light novel that is openly queer. When contextualized, you can see where it breaks away from other light novels

Edit: Nyashi! Do you mind if I contact you on discord? I have something that can help with naming conventions regarding WN vs LN

Based on the character's reactions, how the wands can only retrieve these "Moon Drops" only once and Yui feelings of jealousy for "not being able to do ""THAT"" with Touko before the wand", I think those Moon Drops ain't menstruation blood chief.

Nah, the rules are rather explicit. No room for interpretation

Mistakes Were Made, like Bucci Gang, was run by Amarrez. As Amarrez left scanlation to focus on other pursuits, I'll be uploading the anonymous version from here on out

As of chapter 8, I'd say the Father Ulcer Count is up to 3.

I'd call Friedman a yuri expert and go as far as to say that if she doesn't meet your criteria then no one will. I may not always agree with her on what is good or not, but she has been in the yuri scene longer, is more well-read in terms of yuri, and is more connected to yuri creators than likely anyone else. She even tours and gives lectures on yuri and queer identity in the US and Japan. I can't really say much else since I don't know what she said about a room for two or what her bias is, but I would expect a reviewer to have their own opinions and tastes.

I do hope the outfits from the Utena page there get some more screentime in the revolution or empire arcs
