Interesting theory. I just assumed Senpai was introduced to give Shiori (the short-haired girl) a consolation prize after she inevitably loses Kawase.

I'm going all in on Ichika x senpai

Alternative dialogue:

Satou: the real me is a Scumbag so no one would miss me if I were to disappear
Scummy: ..? Do you think of me as some sort of angel?
Satou: ?
Scummy: between lying to my mom for a better allowance and following you home without you knowing, by saying those things you are only making yourself feel more attainable to me!

My favourite part of Suicide Squad is when the squad said "it's suicide time" and suicided all over the bad guys

In general, is very rare to japanese say i love you even married, ha

And in English translations you usually can't tell when they do because "Like" on a romantic sense usually get translated to love

The way I understood it was that Kei has caught Saki scouring shoujo manga for love advice, without realizing that Saki was actually into her. Since the shoujo romance fiction is targeted primarily at teenagers, any love lessons it may contain are necessarily simplistic and hardly applicable to a situation where two useless adults are scared to take the first step out of a rather toxic relationship. Hence while Kei disparages Saki's consumption of shoujo manga, the great irony is that she is just about as immature as her.

I think you're right. Kei was basically trying to say “You're so childish you read shoujo manga!” only she worded it in a somehow convoluted way.

*You're so childish you take advice from shoujo manga

... so, were there any alternative translations to "scumbag"? I feel like this is the kind of moment where a particular choice of words might slightly backfire after 40 chapters, but I don't know Japanese so it's just a guess

The main word is クズ, which is often translated as some variant of the word "scum", and I doubt there's gonna be any distinction made between scum and a bag full of it any time soon. Really the only part of the title I'm taking a few liberties with is translating 浪人生 as "gap student" just cos it gets across clearer in a title than describing the concept of ronins. (Although I do stick with "ronin" in my Slow Start translations mainly due to the sheer amount of samurai jokes they get out of it.)

So a Ronin is slang for a student that follows no teacher?

Makino: " Are you challenging me? Instead of normal excuses you're throwing the Scumbag card?"
Satou: "our love story would be too standard if I didn't "
Makino: "Then I'll tell you about being scummy really is!"

If you truly love a flower you will enjoy its beauty but won't pluck it

This is whats happening, Koga going on that concert date might be nice for her, but creating the possibility of Aya and her friend making amends is good for Aya. And Koga loves Aya so she chooses the option that will make her happy.

On top of that there is also the Semi guilt her socially awkward ass is feeling.

And please stop complaining about chapters that aren't all fluffy wuffy, this isn't meant to be all fluffy wuffy

Come on, a kiss is nice, but she deserves sex already, she's one of the cutest childhood friends I've seen in years, can't end the manga without her senses being overloaded from pleasure.

Cute? Design wise maybe, but her words and actions have been atrocious.

And from a Narrative perspective it is much more likely that she is introduced as and obstacle that rocks the Boat so that Akane and Nadeshiko are forced to confront their status quo, just like Nadeshiko is doing now

Honestly her conspirering to split them apart is giving me flashbacks to the "Childhood little sister" from Citrus

The fish are a metaphor for social anxiety

I think that was just the case for the big carp that dislocated her jaw. When she confessed, it was a different species, whose Japanese pronunciation was a pun on "kissing" (plus, the fish literally kissed as well). It seems the various fish species represent different emotional states, social anxiety being just one of them. Note that she says people started avoiding her because of the fish vomiting, there are no indications she was a social outcast or that she was particularly anxious before this point.

I read it as a metaphor for being queer. Once she started vomiting fish, as in once she came out, people starting avoiding her. Tsucchi stays with her because vomiting fish, or being queer, doesn't bother her. Myaako thinks she might be cured of her fish vomiting, or queerness, if she kisses the person she likes. And in the end, it's not something that can be cured.

See also "Still Sick" for another work that compares queerness and sickness.

Why would kissing a girl cure her of being queer?
I read the kissing scene as she made up an excuse first because she wasn't confident enough to confess

You do realize Genderbending is in itself a separate trope right? Genderbend and Trans can exist separately.

Technically they could exist separately, but in practice, by implication they don't. If the genderbent people in these stories don't transition back, they'd be confortable with their "new" gender -- hence they were trans before.

Some people consider mind and body as different things
