There was a "play" on words on pages 23/25 on "matsuri".

In the raws it was written in hiragana and not in kanji, to be kept ambiguous on purpose. ("matsuri" also means festival)

Which "matsuri" she's talking about I wonder...

No 1/3 of chapter this month (and maybe for a long time).

"The author, Kabocha-sensei, has been ill and will be taking a long hiatus. We are very sorry for the fans who have been waiting for the rest of the story, but please watch over Aya, Koto, and Erika as she recovers."

I had forgotten to translate the liner notes. This is now fixed.

According to her twitter, Sumiko Arai is currently drawing the exclusive booklets for the various shops Volume 3 is going to be sold at.

Maybe next week.

Meanwhile, enjoy the "OST" of the series' booklet that came out a while ago and that I just found the time to translate. I had forgotten it a bit too

It's just pure speculating because we don't get enough chs nowadays... Is there any news about the new chapter or Kabocha?

She slowed down the release rate because of personal issues.

I think we now get about 1/3 of a chapter every month; and since I translate full chapters, you'll have to wait.

I bought the 1st volume and chapter 2 had two additional pages that weren't in the magazine. It may be an important hint, so I added them in the chapter.

Are they pages 13-14?

Yeah.

At this point I think this has become the main line story.

Glad its run well into the hundreds of chapters, with no end in sight.

Mikanuji said on twitter it'll end at vol 10.

that's literally what it is. the "side stories" is a bit of a misnomer. In the middle of volume 4 the manga transitioned from the 4-page chapters to these longer ones.

Chapter 93 was the last 4-page chapter and then it seamlessly continues with chapter 94, which is the first one of these "side stories" here".

You're wrong.

If you look on MD, some Korean scanlator translated from the volumes and you can see that chapter 95, 97, 99 and 101 are 4 pagers that weren't posted on the Newtype website but are volume only.

Also, Mikanuji still uses the numbering of the "side stories" on the web version (1 to 51).

While "side stories" turned out to be a misnomer, there was no indication back then that it was going to fuse. Both were running in parallel. And now it's too late, I'm not going to move this to the "main series" (also, the volume version doesnt have any color).

which would get Erika doing things like childishly racing up the stairs and shouting swears in the middle of club meetings.

@Gabinomicon
LOL
In fact, Erika had never shouted swears in the middle of club meetings. Though l can somehow speculate a bit why translator chose to translate that word the way he had.
Remember this, we are not even equal in discussing this manga considering you eventually have to rely on other people to translate it for you. It's a good example now.

Pretty sure my being a well adjusted adult with romantic experience and an earnest interest in discussing the fiction she likes with other like-minded people trumps your knowledge that she yelled "kuso" instead of literally "bullshit" that one time. :)

She just yelled なんでよwhich is just "why?".

I found it a bit bland, when she seems to be really pissed off, so I adjusted a bit. I don't think "bullshit" is a very strong swear, just something an irritated 14yo could say.

As an aside, something else I recently noticed wrt maturity: 21yo Erika is very deliberately trying to be mature, but only where other people can see her. She puts a lot of effort into her fashion and appearance,

Just a perfect example showing how love is blinding your eyes

Meanwhile 21 year old Aya when we first see her is dressed very immaturely,

LOL 21 yo Aya never exist
what are you smoking sis

In the eyes of the law, Aya is 21.

At this point, it's just nitpick. Even professional translators sometimes swap lines unwittingly and I'm no profesional. I'm not going to change the line or comment on it any further because it's irrelevant to the story.

Hmm, I never pretended to be Japanese. But as far as I know, Genevieve isn't either.

Anyway, I didn't say they were wrong and "trust me I'm right". It's just that, out of any context, the line is naturally interpreted as "Koto contacted me" or 'I got a call from Koto". For it to be disambiguated, you can only rely on context clues, like the bubble pointing to Erika or Aya, but here, we can only see the hands of Aya. It's the only clue that indicates it could be Aya speaking. The まあ、そうだよね that follows is an expression of "I'm not surprised"; "I knew she would", "I guessed as much", etc... in a dialogue, it flows better as a reaction to another person's statement than your own.

Both interpretations are possible here.

V1 : "I got a call from Koto." (And I’m explaining it to you now)
V2 : "Oh, I see, you got a call from Koto" (You just provided me this information and I'm absorbing it)

Aya repeating the information as if it's a discovery and then saying that it's not a surprise feels a bit off to me. But I can't guarantee my intepretation is 100% accurate. And as said several times, it doesn't change anything.

Talking about chapter 13, l just found " …琴から連絡来てたんだ " should be Aya's talking.

It's not that obvious to me.

琴 から: Indicates the source, meaning "from Koto"
連絡 (れんらく, renraku): Means "contact" or "communication" (e.g., a message, call, or email).
来てた: The past tense of "来る" (kuru, "to come"), indicating that the contact/message "came" or was received.
んだ : gives a nuance of explanation or realization.

We see the hands of Aya, but it could be Erika talking. It doesn't change the rest of the conversation, or the story, but apart the hands I don't see in the line itself who could be talking. I went with Erika because it seemed Aya was answering on the next panel. In any case, Erika provided the information that Koto called.

On page 7 Sadako can't hear the conversation, but starting on page 11 her reactions make it seem like she can hear Hanako's monologue. I wonder if that's the case, and she's making connections between their parallel forms of loneliness, or if it's an intentional misdirection on the author's part and she's just reacting to body language and the sudden violence.

It's my bad. I read too fast and missed a word when I translated. There's a よく in the sentence, meaning she can't hear the conversation very well. She can hear it fine when Hanako starts to scream I guess.

It's fixed now.

somehow SPOILER ALERT! Don't read it.

As I noticed, I was right on the spot with my theory. ( the team "against" Erika too) Go check what I wrote 2 weeks ago, if you're curious about the oncoming happenings. LOL... I unconsciously spoiled it with my theory.

You just delayed the next chapter for a month.

Which group? I'm in the "I'd rather sleep" discord server and it looks very much alive and kicking. And the translator (debauchery) is in there too.

Not to say they didn't drop the manga, but I don't know why you make up that story about deleting some discord and vanishing.

If you're talking about that "Anchovye" guy, nothing of value was lost.

She had her own ambitions. I don't see why she should have given up on them.

To note, their break up was a mutual agreement. There's no real bad blood between them. But it's obviously a bitter memory for her, because he somewhat led her on to finally chicken out. She loved him and thought they would build something together, but life didn't let them.

I wouldn't say it's Joe's fault either, because he had to take care of Mitsuki (for yet unexplained reasons). That's just life.

But in the present time, Kanna came back temporarily and Joe kind of took her for granted, conveniently forgetting that she had to go back eventually and had a life over there, that he's not part of.

Maybe she even has a man there (seeing that flashback panel where she's talking with a man with glasses who looks at her gently).

So, as she says, it's too late. She needs to leave, because the longer she stays, the more they look away from reality, the more painful it becomes.

Blastaar posted:
You do argue two slightly different things, though: that Erika "knows" how Aya really feels and that she "guesses" how she feels, and I think only the latter is the case. Aya is definitely acting as if she isn't deeply affected by the breakup.

To add my two cents as the translator, I used "most likely, Aya hides her sadness and pain behind a smile" as Erika's thought, but it's a choice.

Because the Japanese is きっと, which if you look at https://jisho.org/search/%E3%81%8D%E3%81%A3%E3%81%A8 means "surely; undoubtedly; almost certainly; most likely (e.g. 90 percent)".

I chose to translate it as the last one, to keep the bit of uncertainty, but it could have been "I'm sure Aya hides her sadness and pain behind a smile".

In short, there's very little doubt Erika is perfectly aware that Aya is in pain, and doesn't really care.

Not that she has to. Aya is her rival after all.

I don't know what's so complicated about Erika. She just wants Koto to chose her over Aya. That's her "desire". That would resolve all her inferiority complexes and longing.

For that, she wants Koto to be clear headed about Aya and not wallow in her obsession, so she's trying to "break the triangle" in her own way, without hurting either Koto or Aya.

After all, she's the only one who knows the triangle exists.
