This is the closest a yuri character has ever come to my height (I am 178, 1 cm difference!)
Nice
Someday I should draw some autobiographical comics about the height gap with my short ex

Idiot Lesbian

That's a lot of words to say hate you the author.

I feel like they were half-joking, given the type of language and the purposeful amount of words. Was a fun read.

It's what an over active brain and high verbal acuity does to a motherfucker

but which song will it be set to?

Kiss from a rose. Specifically, Angela Aki's female voice version.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aRjbOKCNxg

I… like this version

relatedly, I can't be the only non native speaker who spent the 90s and early 2000s hearing the lyrics of this song as

"Kiss from a rose
on a grave"

way more goth.

You're not the only one!

There's a trope in medieval Arabic literature (you're an extremely precocious five year old, we're assuming)

Gonna get my daughter some medieval Arabic literature to read… otoh, seeing how little she cares about pre-Christian Irish literature, maybe i should wait a few years

I recommend that you do NOT start with One Thousand and One Nights. I tried reading that when I was 8 and it gave me nightmares. Also it's pretty horribly racist and sexist. Like people are usually aware of the basic premise that a king that is executing his wives so the latest one gives him a cliffhanger story every night that never ends to forestall the execution, but it's usually left out that he's doing that because his wife cheated on him with an African slave during an orgy so now he's too traumatized being emasculated by a black dude to ever let his wives live longer than the wedding night. Can't cheat on me if you're dead! Medieval problems require medieval solutions. Super wholesome stuff for an 8 year old.

Please explain to me chapter 4 like I'm five, I didn't understand it

Kira is tired of people she does not know falling in love with her. From her perspective she's not doing anything, just existing, and then suddenly now and again a stranger who intensely wants things from her appears. Worse yet the unwanted attention causes her social problems, so it's experienced as an imposition that she starts to resent. "You have no idea who I am and yet you show up, demand the most intimate things from me and fuck up my social life in the process??" Which is a fuckin mood, though I didn't experience it myself until I was in my 20's, and which has mercifully subsided now that I'm an old hag.

Then Hikaru shows up and she thinks it's going to be more of the same, except Hikaru actually asks to be rejected. There's this dynamic in social justice circles that might be illustrative here, where sympathetic people on a higher rung of the social hierarchy get verbally abused by those lower on it because people who deal with bigotry can't take it out on the actual bigots but you can yell at a friendly straight person or whatever. It's a kind of displacement, the people you actually want to yell at won't ever understand why you're yelling at them but the friendly straight person will see and understand your pain, so you take out your frustration on them instead. Hikaru actually isn't shallow in the way Kira disdains, despite her uncontrollable infatuation she has her priorities and asks to be rejected, but Kira sees her as a convenient outlet for her frustration so she decides to mess with her. As she gets to know her she realizes she's treating her as a prop in her internal drama the same way people who don't know her asking her out do, and starts to feel guilty about it. And catches feelings in the process.

There's a trope in medieval Arabic literature (you're an extremely precocious five year old, we're assuming) where a character gets asked by a monarch to become an advisor, and the character refuses, because they're a pious person who does not sully themselves with ugly demands of power, their priorities correctly concerned with heaven rather than earthly matters. The offer to become a vizier establishes the worth of the person, and the rejection of the opportunity for more social status establishes their piety. In a sense Hikaru established her worth by asking to be rejected, because what is not demanded can be freely given. Kira can love her back and feel it uncoerced specifically because Hikaru never asked to be loved.

Also, what kind of jerk ass elementary kid call their classmate “slut”

Real sixth graders may shock and dismay you.

Seriously, grades 6-8 were when all my classmates got really obsessed with sex and losing their virginity, while of course shaming everyone who managed to do it, reflecting our split mind about sexuality. Haha you're an ugly loser who can't get laid, how dare you have had sex that's awesome you shameful slut. In classic precocious kid fashion I thought everyone was crazy. I was like you don't move into a different ontological category when a penis touches you for the first time, this is all made up nonsense, but they thought I was the one who's crazy lol.

"Lesbians are not good with communication" is just a trope and not a real thing, right?

"Most people are not good at communicating their feelings" is not a trope, unfortunately, but a harsh reality. That's why romance fiction is all over this topic...

I briefly dated someone where it started pretty close to this manga. She really was flirty with everyone so I didn't think anything of it whenever she flirted with me, and I didn't respond. So she got more forward with it and slipped my hand into her cleavage one day and I was like "uh, this doesn't feel like innocent flirtation anymore" and she was like "it never was!" and I was like "but you're flirty with everyone???" and she was like "... what? Oh. But not this much! I wouldn't say all this to someon unless I was serious"

Anyway the manga is completely and ridiculously unrealistic of course.

Aww I kinda ship her with the ex this time to be honest. I usually don't in stories but come on Meguru is a child and she needs someone to heal not someone to groom her. Kasane's mental age isn't far from a teenager though. But I think the ex isn't over her.

I was earlier, but now I'm like Mimei go find someone else, you can do better lol

I really like the Imouto-Lapis Switcheroo theory.

I don't. When I saw that line from Rubeus I was like ugh, are doing this haha

But also if it's true it just adds like a whole other psychological dimension to her suffering. Like imagine having to become someone else, to cease to have your own identity. That's gotta just like, lock in that trauma, you can't process watching your sister get murdered and heal a bit if you have to walk around pretending to be her. If at any point in the roleplay you ask yourself "what would the real lapis do?" when trying to figure out how to act, "take revenge on the people who killed me" is a nonsensical but real thought that comes out of that scenario. Mixes with the grief real nice, chase closure by making your sister kill the people who killed her.

May I be wrong to my own satisfaction, may all of that have been a wild red goosering chase

I've been kinda thinking this for a while, but the child's bedroom being shown brought it back to mind: What if Lapis is not the original Lapis, and is in fact Aurora; making the original Lapis the one who died for her sake. And then she, for political reasons, was induced to take her place while everyone was told that she herself had died. It would explain the estrangement between her and her apparent father, and the vibe the story puts out whenever events parallel something between Aurora and Lapis in a flashback.

Or maybe I'm reading too much into the fact we never see little Lapis's eyes, but the glimpse we get at Aurora's show them to be not dissimilar to Adult Lapis's.

I thought that was confirmed by Rubeus lol. There's a flashback to the killing and he says "when a noble is killed"; aurora was a commoner if I remember correctly, implying that Lapis was the one who died. There's other hints too, "parent and child" is in quotation marks when she's talking to her father, plus all the stuff about her existence being an act and wouldn't it be nice if she was who she pretends to be.

edit: ok yeah I'm remembering the flashback from the first chapter where Lapis is killed. She says her younger sister is a commoner which I took to mean Aurora. Something that never made sense to me about that flashback is how she derisively calls her sister "that thing" when the whole story is her wanting revenge, she obviously holds her in high esteem. It makes more sense she's talking about herself in that moment since she was the younger sister and she hates herself.

edit edit: I kind of want to know who reprimanded Rubeus to shut up in that scene, I can't tell who that speech bubble is supposed to belong to

This seems backwards, if he were still a duke he'd have land to worry about keeping in the family and would need to worry about his family's social standing, but they've already lost all that.

like sure still a valid concern if you have plans to claw your way back to power and he's rationalizing to disapprove of the relationship but this feels like we're supposed to take the logic at face value
