Gai-rei (yuri, tragic ending)

Are you talking about Ga-rei Zero or Ga-rei? I could see Zero, but in Ga-rei it's more subtext and a happy end in the manga for the het couples, which, in other words, is each girl in the yuri couple getting together with a guy.

Anime was amazing. I know it's technically a prequel to manga, but manga retcons a lot of stuff and I didn't like where it was going so I dropped it. Anime has perfect, satisfying ending, so let's just pretend manga doesn't exist.

You can argue that it wasn't stated that they love each other and it could as well be just strong friendship, but I still see it as love story. Especially since this is the anime's selling quote: "Will you kill someone you love because of love?" (spoilers)

according to MAL it has 3 more chapters, is it true?

It has 3 chapters in total, so only the final chapter remains.

I read it long time ago, so I was surprised when I was clearing my MAL that from 2 related oneshots, it became 5 chapters manga (1 is described as bonus oneshot though)

This means two things, either Kanna is a weakling our lovestruck dragon is very strong.

As Kanna herself stated, Tooru is the abnormal one. Also I thought it was really interesting idea (mana I mean ).

I mean, the scanlation used female pronouns but I was under the impression that the Japanese language lacked such things. Also, Kobayashi seems suspiciously androgynous.

Idk why but I always saw Kobayashi as female from the start. And yea, technically you can talk in such way that your gender is unidentifiable, but there are ways to express it (linked stereotypical to gender, but still) and there exist first person pronounces that clearly states gender. Watashi is gender neutral, but Atashi is used by females only. Same as with Ore and Boku for males. Anyway, I doubt Kobayashi actually use atashi and as was pointed, it was stated she is a girl.

Fudonshi

Fudanshi.

My bad, so there really is one for male yaoi fun.

are male yaoi fans I believe, however, I don't think there's a word for yuri fans. I remember a user here saying that they took a trip to Japan and they saw the manga shop: full of yaoi, but only a small section for yuri. I guess we're just over looked, which I find is really weird. Usually, lesbians are glorified or sexualizedwhile, sadly, gay men are looked down upon.

I think it it more the fact that girls find 2 hot guys having sex with each other even hotter. From what I know, girls where first to ship every single possible character into couple, so that is why yaoi is more popular. Yuri just doesn't have similar fan base. It's even similar in my own country. Girls are majority of yaoi fans and while there is demand for yuri, it's much smaller.

But it's kinda awesome being apart of such a small group.

I agree. I'm yuri fan for like 7 years and most other people are just anime/manga fans or yaoi fans. I rarely meet other yuri fans which make me feel unique and I never complained about it.

I honestly think "yuri fan" is all you need and we all know from experience that making japanese terms up didn't work that well in the past (cough shoujo/shounen ai cough)

Fujoshi is the only term for anime/manga maniac, other than otaku, that I ever encountered. And yes, its for females because it seems they are large majority of people that enjoy yaoi. Sure, there are bond to be some male fans, maybe even straight, but I guess there just isn't enough for them to make their own.

So I guess yuri fans in japan didn't come up with their own term. From what I know yaoi is more popular in general and has bigger fanbase, so I guess that is why only they got their own term (don't quote me on that).

Also I got why you would want your own term and Yujoshi looks claver at first, but it really hurts my eyes, as a person who actually understand japanese ^ ^".

EDIT/ Not to mention if you know where fujoshi came from (unless you want to call yourself a rotten lily ;x)

Personaly I've read a tad too many of those and have become jaded towards that kind of setting.

My thoughts exactly.

Expressing an opinion by saying something is "shit" just begs for antagonism from people who actually think it's not. It's kind of a provocation.

I can't argue with that, but sometimes you think something is so bad, that there is no point in coming up with half-assed reasoning. You just call it for what you see it. A shit. (I actually never called anything shit, but for some reason phrase "it's shit" is so funny to me and reflects someones thoughts on matter perfectly xD).

I like the way Yuzu puts all her efforts into getting her genuine feelings accross despite the hurdles in her path. I like the way Mei is slowly opening up because Yuzu keeps trying to break the walls she put around herself. Each drama brings them closer and that's how the relationship goes forward. It may be too slow for some people, but the pace isn't that bad. And the (possible) side couples are also interesting.

Don't get me wrong, I like have the characters were presented and general idea of Yuzu trying to reach to Mei. What didn't work for me was how drama was build. Instead of some real issue in their relationship, their dialog or their action, what get them closer are some random events, by some random characters who then immediately disappear. The scenes between Mei and Yuzu work well (for the most part), but I just can't take this unrealistic streak of bad coincidences seriously.

And what pisses me the most, there was actually really good direction that this series could take while still maintaining drama, but was completely disregarded for the sake of forced drama and getting them together. Yuzu understood that what Mei needs is not a lover but a family. That could be such powerful move. Make Yuzu finally accepted her feelings for Mei, but then have to hid it because Mei doesn't really think about her in that way. You can have your angst with Yuzu trying to copy with just being a sister and after having Mei develop better relationship with Yuzu, then go into couple territory.

I really wanted to see them as couple, but I could endure waiting if that was the direction that manga took. Sadly after all that cliche drama, I'm so tired of that series, even though they finally got together, I don't really care anymore. Especially since author already have next drama in store and looking at their quality so far, I don't really want to read it.

And if I was the only one, I don't think 7seas would pick it up.

From what I saw, this kind of angsty story with drama for the sake of drama has surprisingly big fanbase. People like to get their share of "damn feels", but I prefer when it happens for better reasons than for drama itself.

Next... Japan !?!?! :D

(Wonder how it will affect the yuri genre through. More canon ending perhaps?)

At least we would get much more variety like you see in shoujo. Stories about not being accepted and "it's wrong" would become a niche.

In my country same-sex marriage is not only not honored, but is considered illegal by constitution. Have fun guys ;x

Personally, I like Citrus.

It's what I always say to the kids : don't say something is "shit", just say that you don't like it. YMMV.

It's true that people have different opinions and you can't tell them which one is right or wrong, but isn't saying thing such as "citrus is shit" just a opinion? Going out of your way to say "in my opinion" every time is kinda redundant.

I liked Citrus at first. The art was great and story had potential. Sadly after crossing first hurdle, the story went into direction I hate. Pointless, forced drama. What is worst, instead of just focusing on 1 problem longer, author just change "drama of the weak" every 3-4 chapters. Not to mention how cliches those drama are. You can basically make a check list:
Misunderstanding. Check
Love triangle. Check
(try at) NTR. Check
Forced to break up. Check

The pacing is terrible. Author has really poor writing skills. Without relaying on angst, he(?) have no idea how move things forward. Sorry, but it just wasn't worth my time. I can understand how someone can like it, but I want my drama to have a real purpose.

Shimapanda

So lolicon/shotacon is used by more people to talk about pedophiles and not just by otakus like Nevri said in another thread?

Dude. You tell a regular person you're into lolicon anywhere in the world and they'll assume you're a paedophile.

The terms themselves even have an origin in sexual attraction to children (Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita, for one).

Hey, tell that to Nevri, he's/she's the one that said shoujo ai/shounen ai are used to talk about pedophiles, and not lolicon/shotacon because supposedly only otakus use those terms.

I read too fast, I think you kinda missed the point. Shimapanda just meant that knowing what lolicon means, it makes you pedophile anywhere you say it.

I can't check it. It just sounded logical that term that was created in otakus circles would be used by them and rest would use something else. Maybe it become popular enough that rest use it too now. I don't live in Japan so I have no idea.
