I dunno...I don't think it was because of the subtext that this work felt so mediocre. The pacing was off and the in-your-face Cinderella metaphor grated on me a bit -- it was like the author was trying too hard to be literary. I liked the author's other work though.

Unpopular opinion here, but I (a queer female who's disparaged her fair share of voyeuristic het-targeted yuri) didn't see anything wrong with this manga?? Now that I've read the comments, I understand why people are outraged. However, the reality is that for the longest time in human history, women have been ritualistically checked for their virginity and marriage has been closely associated with financial gain.

What makes me think this manga is social commentary and not your typical Class S story is that the author depicts 'heterosexual reintegration' with as much joy as watching children die in a meat grinder. The obvious parallels of the girls' approaching marriages with human trafficking can hardly be construed as the author's endorsement of compulsory heterosexuality. The lack of rebellion by the students might be frustrating, sure, but not every story ends with the restoration of justice.

Of course, the rest of the chapters could prove me wrong. Those of you who've read the rest of the manga, I'm curious to hear how it plays out.

Anyway, I hope the translators (if there are any left) haven't been too discouraged by the negative reception. While it's everyone's right to prefer feel-good yuri because the real world's tough as it is, I personally think this site has a place for manga that opens up legitimate discussions, uncomfortable or not.

btw, this marriage end made me wonder what if same-sex marriage suddenly become legal in japan, how will this affect the yuri genre? since most yuri is born in the harsh conditions and views of society. would yuri lose it's charm, or would it become even more interesting?

I believe it'd become more interesting. When same-sex marriage is hidden away and relatively unacknowledged, stereotypes and misunderstandings abound; when it's out in the open, these stereotypes weaken in their appeal, creating greater room and a wider audience for more diverse representations of same-sex relationships. So in other words, the genre would become more 'interesting'.

But, of course, that depends on what you personally find interesting or charming. I don't find that drama arising from transgressing societal norms is particularly 'charming' per se, but I do see how engaging in the forbidden can carry a certain allure. Not to mention that the 'oh noes we're both girls' angst is a convenient plot device too, even though some may argue that it's been milked to death.

Unlike in Western media, China's censorship is not so much to protect children's innocence as to prevent threats to governmental power. Any large community that deviates from the status quo, including the LGBT, is perceived as a threat, which is why depictions of homosexuality are so heavily policed. While older generations' disapproval of homosexuality doesn't help, it's only a secondary issue; even the government doesn't take too much issue with the pure principle of homosexuality these days.

With regards to the overpopulation argument, this has probably already been written somewhere in these two thousand-odd comments, but propagating the family line by having biological children is deeply entrenched in Chinese culture. Even if a parent acknowledges that homosexuality might mitigate overpopulation somewhat, they likely can't accept that their kid has to be the one to fix overpopulation, meaning that most people are far less adverse to the idea of someone else's kid being gay than their own.

I couldnt focus on this at all because I kept thinking MC looks like Maki lol. I'll pick it up again if the next chapters come out but not for now xD
