I feel like this is calling out some segment of commenters, I'm just not sure which one.

And this is why I refuse to play HoYo games. They might have good mechanics, but they also have gacha and that ruins everything.

I hesitate to ask, but what is Class of 2009? I know it's a game, but not much else.

People at that school seem really mean. First we saw the demon girl bullying the troll girl, then we saw her getting bullied about her centaur girlfriend, and now she's back to bullying the caterpillar girl.

Edit: Wait, no, that was her centaur wife, so either that comic happens later or its someone else. Either way, the demon girl and the witch seem to like bullying people.

With how deep that stake was, and the way the nurse seemed to need some rope to get it out, the fact that the MC could just yank it out makes me wonder if she might be somewhat superhuman herself.

I just realized two things. First, the summary specifies that all the students at this school are orphans, which I don't think came up in the first chapter, but feels pretty significant.

Second, she's just starting middle school, so she's what, 12? That makes the "find a lover" command even more weird. Are there any other possible interpretations or connotations that could have been lost in translation, like the Villainess thing, or that she might be missing in universe?

Why would you run a school this way tho.

This is like a recipe for complex and unusual traumagenic mental illnesses. Psychologists would have a field day.

You say that, but it seems like they already are, since this is clearly the Yuri-Middle-School branch of Stanford.

The manga is literally called "the role of the femme-fatale" are we sure "villainess" isn't supposed to be translated as "femme fatale"? Especially since "Villainess" is a generic evil person whereas "femme fatale" is specifically associated with seduction, which is the only angle I can see as to why she was given the role because of her questionnaire answer.

I know that villainess yuri has become something of a genre in recent times, and it's one that I quite enjoy myself, but I don't think the term should be misused just to be fit into the genre if that's why it was done.

The actual word in the raws is 悪女 (akujo) - "wicked woman" if you go strictly by a dictionary (which is not the end all be all of translation, word for word translations are awful). Given that the "wicked stepmother" is a prototypical villainess, villainess seems perfect here.

Though yes the title uses 魔性の乙女 and from what I see 魔性の女 is often translated as "femme fatale", yes. But that's not the word in the text.

Wicked woman sounds like it should imply a degree of seduction, more than just being a villain, and the wicked step mother trope doesn't actually feel like a close analog, despite sharing a word. While Femme Fatal probably isn't an exact match, it's a lot closer to how the phrase gets used in popular culture like the film A Wicked Woman, any of the songs that use that line, or the Eagle's Witchy Woman, which is clearly a play on wicked woman.

I don't know how much of it is just an artifact of translation and linguistic differences, but way they're described as the "present", rather than current, Shuten Doji, and the fact that it's in quotes, makes me think that there might be something else going on here. Either something about that figure is false—they aren't actually present or they aren't actually Shuten—or becoming Shuten Doji means more than just taking on a new title and set of responsibilities.

Everyone's focusing on the cuteness with Aya, but those last couple of panels are oof. We know she was already struggling with academics; now we see she was working on songs in her math not book and the way she looked away as she closed it and said she was going to bed ... If I'm not reading too much into it, she's using songwriting and music to procrastinate on studying and thinking about her actual future, while also refusing to actually think about a future as an artist, and she knows it's going to come back to bite her.

I can relate to being in that kind-of self destructive rut. It's not good and I hope she can pull herself out of it before she finds herself in a place without good options.

On an unrelated note, is it possible to actually make out what she wrote for a title?

Koveras posted:

"It's easy to be creative for some reason," she says. Well, no shit, Sherlock, it's not like you have your greatest fan on speed dial who worships everything you write.

Eh. Having someone who's super supportive on speed dial can be helpful, but it can also be intimidating, because what if you don't live up to their expectations? I think the real reason she's finding it easy to write music is because "there's no goal to [it]." It's a purely self-indulgent exercise that she doesn't expect to share with anyone, and doesn't actually expect to be good, so she doesn't feel any pressure when doing it.

We've seen that Koga has a somewhat avoidant personality when it comes to doing things that she considers important or potentially difficult, in that she'll shy away from even thinking about them or catastrophize about them, and that to get past that she often has to wait until she hits a crisis point and then throw herself into some big, spectacular, effort. (Just look at her performance, at the school festival, for Aya.) Again, this is very familiar behavior and I'm starting to wonder if she might have ADHD, though that might just be me projecting myself onto the character.
