Our main point of difference: I think she seems to be doing better than could be expected. When someone first encounters something that's completely outside their range of what they've considered acceptable, it tends to be noticeable. Often it's interpreted as judgement or otherwise as a faux pas, even when the person wasn't intending to be. They can then either double down or reflect before deciding how to act in the future.

This is based on my experience living in two non-cosmopolitan but otherwise disparate areas of the US, one where I was viewed as part of the dominant culture and one where I was seen as an outsider.

Also, agreed that different perspectives are a fine- or rather, it's a good thing since yours is what got me thinking about the story more deeply.

That's fair I think, I say similar pages since I don't think we're super different in our views. From my understanding you're more forgiving of her behavior, and I'm a bit harsher. Which I do also understand where you're coming from, and I should say I'm not saying she's horrible, only that I hope we do get to see her grow beyond some of her current rigid views.

You are right she was rude. If Phu Thuy was more bothered by it, she would likely moderate herself more. Phu Thay literally invited the sheltered housewife to an orgie. We don't have any instances of someone being seriously uncomfortable with Yuri, but I suspect she would notice and react to it.

Most of the comments seem to joke about it and ask for more or assume it'll boost sales; many are saying they'll basically need to buy the volume or venture to amazon "for research." I don't know if this person was being serious but no one responding seems to be serious.

One person even got upset because people aren't putting the title in their post and they think it's a terrible world because of that. Some also mention that it's Semi-friend and already know that's how the series is. I really doubt it's anything bad. The company knew what it was before publishing, it has to reach a few eyes before it goes out. If anything, this should be the best expected result. But who knows.

Yeah I saw in passing someone saying in English that such content doesn't belong in the magazine, so I was worried that might be the general vibe but I was hoping it was just one grumpy person. I know I worry a lot and that's not healthy for me, the internet unfortunately can be...a difficult place to say the least lol

They know what they're doing and they're using this as publicity. With how many reprints Semi-Friend has gotten so far, it's quite obvious that the series is one of the best-selling series they currently have, so I doubt they would just let it go like that.

I was thinking about this comment. In US terms, she is like a white woman from Alabama who married an abusive husband right out of high school before being isolated by that husband. She has very little exposure to people different than her, which for a lot of people happens for the first time in college or their careers. She also doesn't have an open or healthy way of relating to herself.

If we imagine someone like this on the run in Thailand, Yuri is doing pretty well in terms of adjusting and being respectful to other people. She has more to learn, but has shown herself willing to do so.

Yeah Yuri was dealt a shitty hand, her world was limited by her abusive husband and the layers of society that expected her to go along with such a marriage. That's also why I wish she'd say "Who gives a fuck about societal expectations and norms", though I know it takes awhile to get to that point. So far Yuri has been pretty rude towards Phu Thuy, and it mostly felt like she agreed to move on and not dwell on things so they could focus on the mission, so I don't know if she has any desire to change. I guess we'll see, I don't hate her it's more that I hope she grows as the story progresses.
