Is there a reason the more ecchi aspects of the early chapters seemingly toned down later on?

Probably the publisher or the magazine.
Kishi is still very on board on ecchi works, so its not that they "out grew that".

Personally, I doubt the "bad" girl to be a Mermaid.

Japan has their version, yes, but in the power totem, they are around the middle. So, would a Mermaid actually be enough to challenge an Inari?

Thus, I think she is actually some sort of water dragon, that would explain why her level.

Nice twist at the end, it seemed just another day in this dumb couple life, then we notice they live together, then the rings, then it clicks.

The last chapter was in the short future, where they got to live together as wives, nice character progression in such a simple step.
