They may be genderless but if they look like girls then it's yuri for me.

I think the gems are purposely kept androgynous enough that people will see what they want to see. I've seen BL fans swear up and down that the characters definitely look like boys to them.

@LilyBlack: I don't know what you mean by "Purposely Kept Androgynous". I haven't read a lot of the manga (yet) but I have watched the anime and from I've gathered they don't have any need for genitals, since they don't do things like using the bathroom, but most importantly they don't reproduce. They're formed over time on that giant rock on the beach from what I recall. So the gems being androgynous makes complete sense in my opinion. What people are supposed to see are these sleek dazzling beautiful figures and I think the series does that very well. Anyhow that aside the art here is cute and it's fun to see the various ships people make with fan-art.

I personally prefer thinking of them as genderless as it's more cute. Yaoi? Yuri? Both? Doesn't matter. They make such cute couples.

They are androgynous because they are genderless. You know. Because they are freaking gems. Last time I checked minerals/stones didn't have gender. And yes, it was said in the story or confirmed by author. Don't remember which.

^ Last time I checked gems weren't sentient beings either. And since everyone(tm) walks around saying gender is a social construct, it seems insidious to suddenly argue with biology (or mineralogy ^^) - it's perfectly plausible that they would have developed some sort of gender structure for themselves.
Of course, they apparently didn't. But just saying. ^^

coming here after reading the manga and finding most comments being about the gender of gems... they are gems! On a side note, that's Ghost Quartz, Cairgorn doesn't even like Lapiz.
