From what I read of Watamote (and this was a while ago) it's Bojack Horseman levels of depressing. The main character iirc is fine with being bisexual as a way to try and find anyone to care about her.

The last 2 or 3 volumes are hard subtext with a couple of girls pretty much confirmed yuri crush

Is this actually something has a lot of subtext?
Or are people just big wishful thinkers?
No, it's definitely there.
Tomoko's heterosexuality has been in question since the beginning of the manga. But about 2/3 of the way through the series the yuri subtext ramps up dramatically. There's also a full-on lesbian crush, though thus far it's unrequited.

This is true for the first few volumes, but Tomoko has mellowed out a great deal since then. Her current "harem" wasn't borne of desperation or attention seeking. She genuinely started to make some friends and things just snowballed from there.

Just take it one chapter at a time. Trust me, it'll be more than worth it in the end.

The first 70 or so chapters are very hard to read. Chapter 71 is about the turning point where the series becomes a bit more about Tomoko interacting with people.

If you can marathon this, do it, just do it, the cringe of the first part only makes it better once you see how much it developed, also latest chapters are soooo gay, i swear, if she doesn't end with a girl (or at least not with a dude) i'm gonna riot

Concentrated exposure to early Watamote cringe will drive most people to suicide.

@Prince_Anime Tomoko has the opposite reaction with Asuka so it looks like she going to end with Asuka.

@Tyraneo THIS, oh my God this! If you think you'll never feel happy for a fictional character getting some positive character development, that's because you have yet to read Watamote form the beggining.

Dunno, I can't say first 70 chapters are "hard to read". Yeah, her mother and brother are complete assholes, but only one chapter is depressing(when mother directly attacked Tomoko). Her family acts the same annoying way, but today Tomoko has few (lesbian) friends to spend time with, and even one stalker-tsundere. This is great.

^I'd say it's actually less about her family and more about Tomoko herself becoming utterly deplorable for a while, especially when she started deceiving her only existing friends and pretended a random schoolmate was her boyfriend, which really lowered my opinion of the manga a lot, although it has been working hard to leave these dark times behind. Still, that part is a big reason why my rating for this manga will probably never rise back to where it was at its start.
