^If I had to guess, I'd say that, even if the pairing is very cute, looking at them may bring an overwhelming depression due to the impossibility of realization. At least for me, when getting close to the date that the new series would release, I decided to re-watch the old one... I got so sad that I couldn't start the new series to this day. (In doubt, I just spoiler tagged basically everything, but let me know if it was unnecessary)

The "so long as my loved one is happy, then I'm happy" thing is just kinda sad for me.

One of my childhood favorite series is heavily laden with gay premises and ended up with straight notion and I still liked it till now. Back then I didn't realise it tho

Imo, if Tomoyo won't get together with Sakura, she should at least get an alternative love interest (maybe Meiling, though she only exists in the anime).

Tomoyo might actually be the first gay character in anime that I really respected even though it was back when I was still in grade school. Yes; she deserve lot of respect.
