I agree it is beautiful art - but the thought keeps intruding - why the hell are 2 girls in fancy dresses kissing at the bottom of a pond!? Except for a photo shoot the only thing to make sense would be a lovers suicide - which is hardly a nice idea.

They're both standing/pointed upwards, so there are plenty of reasons available. Maybe they were standing at opposite ends and couldn't wait to walk the side. Maybe one fell in and the other came after. Maybe they just wanted to sneak a kiss in a place where admitting their love would've been impermissible.
