Wouldn't they have to chisel Phos' lips off after they get in contact with Shinsha?

@Phil: Just if she came in contact with the liquid mercury itself, I think.
I love that they have green and red blushes too respectively...makeup must have rubbed off a bit, since rocks don't blush. :P

Given how brittle they both are I'm surprised one of them didn't need to be put back together!

No, it doesn't. The gems are genderless beings, so you shouldn't use gendered terms for any of them.

@Susurrus I don't know if that's the case in Houseki no Kuni, but the Gems in SU are also genderless, but identify as female.
Again, I don't know if that's the case in Houseki no Kuni, but biologically genderless ≠ psychologically genderless, and it's the psychological gender that matters.

From what I know they never refer to themselves with any specific gender.

@juanelric
"sexless" is not "genderless".
SU gems are sexless, but feminine in gender.
The gems in Houseki no Kuni are both sexless and non-gendered/agender/non-binary, and this has been confirmed to the official English translators by the author; specifying that 'they/them' is the appropriate term to use in English.
Also, worth mentioning that gender is not "psychological", it's neurological (being an emergent property of the brain's structure, which is biological).
You're either referring to sex, or referring to gender; referring to the former with a term like "biological gender" is silly.

Then, we definitely need the tag for "Gem" and "Genderless"
