Tomoko managed to create a social circle at school. Said circle consists entirely of her female classmates. The series proper isn't nearly as gay as Dynasty's image section would lead you to believe. Most of the yuri only exists as subtext.
Except for this one girl who has a straight-up crush on Tomoko. However, it's unrequited (for now).

When I watched this anime a while ago I didn't realize yuri would be in it, now I'm reading the manga
If you want to read the manga I believe it's best to start reading from the field trip where tomoko meets most of her harem, that's where a lot of the development starts, and you wouldn't need that much knowledge prior to the field trip

You won't understand the series as it goes on if you don't at least read the Megumi plot thread, which begins in chapter 20. Megumi is absolutely crucial to the way Tomoko evolves.
