I think if not for the disaster in her first year and isolation in second, Nico would be this sort of person all the time. Supportive, motherly, but still into the whole "I'm the cutest" thing. From what we see of her with her siblings and in the times when her façade breaks, that's really her true self.

@Nezchan that really hit me hard. I'd never thought of it like that, but I really imagine that is what would've had happened.
Although in some ways, that disaster did bring some blessings in disguise. A big reason why she resisted/eventually joined Muse was because of the lingering bitterness of that defeat, and her desire to try again at something she had failed before. Everything has a silver lining, I guess.

@Nezchan In the manga, she never went through the first year crisis she did in the anime, and she’s definitely not anywhere near as abrasive as the anime. I wouldn’t really call her ‘motherly’, that’s more Nozomi, but she definitely has a big sister attitude, at least when she’s not praising herself or teasing the others.
