I heard the dub is really bad. Besides the aforementioned change in Kobayashi's line, Kanna isn't deadpan and an exchange between Tohru & Lucoa has some political view inserted into it, something about changing clothes because of patriarchal society pressure or something like that.

^You do realize that the last episode of the anime was basically Kobayashi and Tohru trying to convince Tohru's conservative father to let them live together after he tried to split them up? The metaphor did not require very thick yuri goggles.
The anime series in general was basically an extended metaphor for starting a lesbian household in Japan.

95%+ of the time dubs voice actors are worse - usually vastly - than the originals - and loose all charm and nuance. Also it lip-syncs a lot worse and sounds dumb because most of the time are Japanese people. They should be speaking Japanese. You also loose the unique sound of that seiyū.
Go watch a clip of some classic film you love with cheap dubbing from india or somewhere - marvel at how terrible / stupid it seems (from an English speakers perspective) to have Gandalf or Darth Vader or whoever talking Hindi or Russian. THAT is what you are doing to an anime with your English dub. I think all films should be watched in their original language.

Not sure how big a deal I'd make out of the lip synch though, when the Japanese aren't necessarily all that focused on it themselves. Most anime, even well-animated stuff, you'll find that they don't bother most of the time with different mouth shapes, just having the same mouth open-mouth closed cycle that more or less matches the vocal timing, except in the rare instances where you're supposed to read a character's lips. Contrast that with a show like Legend of Korra, where the mouths actually change shape depending on the sounds being produced. Now that is something that would suffer from being dubbed into another language with totally different sounds.
Anime, television stuff at the very least, tends to cut a lot of corners to save on budget, and lip-synch has traditionally been one of those "corners". The audience is used to it, so nobody much pays attention to it after a while.

From what I understand, there's one pool of seiyuu everybody draws from. Meanwhile, not only are American VAs spread across the country, but dubs are the bottom-of-the-barrel in terms of pay scale, so the real talent tends to go to other media(eg, video games or western cartoons).

Speaking as an absolute deal, it's certainly true; each series has room for a discussion regarding its sub and its dub. And when one completely changes what a character says, it's definitely ripe for criticism.

And to put that into perspective for you all, video game voice acting pay is so bad that SAG-AFTRA has been on a strike over it since October. This is part of a dispute that's been active for a couple years, mind you all.

SF People can debate whatever they want. Although, in this case, it would be a bit difficult seeing as how it's two different languages and countries and that comes with them. However, I'm not saying which is better. I'm just stating which one I prefer watching anime in. Since I speak English and not Japanese, it's easier to follow the story. That being said, it can become unbearable to watch if the dub is bad enough, which almost never happens. Dragon Maid happens to be one of the rare few.

Every Dub vs Sub flamewar I've seen occur on the internet always ends up with both parties making complete fools of themselves. They always degenerate to squealing about how either "Subs are superior! You're just a fag who's to lazy to read Subtitles!!" or "Dubs are superior! You're just a weeaboo who has a hate-boner against english VA's!". Both sides never act mature.
