Man, as much Touhou Project as shows up on here, you'd think I'd have learned everybody by now. I suspect that TP fanartists could just insert their own made-up characters into their art and nobody would be the wiser.

The thing is, most of the artists who do that create male characters, so it's pretty obvious that they're fan-made. At least, from what I've seen.

For female characters, there are so many you don't need to bother making a new one. It's the hets that are stuck having to force their self-insert into Gensokyo.

Yeah, waaay to many Touhou characters...

Having a bunch of characters isn't in any way unique to Touhou, though. People on Dynasty just like to mention Touhou due to the huge amount of pairing tags here.

Kantai Collection has a bunch of characters, but I have a much better grasp on them. I find them easier to recognize and easier to distinguish from one another. I don't know all of them, but I know a huge chunk.
Touhou characters just don't stick to my brain in the same way. Too many of them wear those long, poofy Strawberry Shortcake dresses, so I have a hard time telling them apart. Not surprisingly, the one I have the easiest time recognizing is Mokou.

Really? I find it just the opposite, I see KanColle and all I see are a troupe of similar-looking anime girls with random ship parts stuck to them. Often having the ship (the other kind of ship) names in the tags is the only way I have of knowing who any of these women are. By contrast, there's no way to confuse Marisa with Patchouli, or Murasa with Nitori, or most any of the others. The character designs are far too distinct from each other. It might be hard to keep track of all the names since it's a large cast, but it's dead easy to tell people apart.

I assure you that, if you're me, it is astonishingly easy to confuse them! :D
Only way I recognise Patchy is from her hat. I can only tell Remilia and Flandre apart if I can see their wings. Whereas I have no problem recognizing Nagato or Mutsu (or Tenryuu or Tatsuta or Hibiki or...) even if they're drawn in street clothes different from their shipgear or their usual outfits.
It's a little frustrating, really. Obviously there is a wealth of excellent Touhou Project material out there, and I wish it didn't bounce so hard off of my brain. Apparently when it comes to Touhou Project, I am unfortunately like Jack Burton: I was not put on this earth to "get it".
(I keep trying, though! If nothing else, I can still enjoy Mokou x Kaguya.)

Playing the games helps. To help with the name memorization you also get the game and stage they appeared in, their song, and bullet pattern. Trying to 1cc the game will pretty much guarantee you'll see the names enough to remember them.

Vankomycin wrong you know why, cause most touhou fans know all the touhou character plus the backstory at least for the windows era
and I'm no different
also I recognize the characters without the hats, hell some of them doesn't wear them
and blopa yes playing the game do help plus it's generally fun really my favorite is Imperishable Night but even interacting with the fandom and reading about the characters helps alot
