That's a gorgeous picture and really in keeping with the show's particular brand of insanity. Also an interesting choice to have Anthy carrying Utena and not the other way around.
Man, now I want to watch the rest of it. I only got part way through the second batch duels

nothing to be surprised about. being Utena the most useless, most worthless and dumbest so-called heroine i've ever seen, it could never be the other way around.

I've tried. I've watched episode after episode waiting for it to become good. Because if every single comment that you can find on Utena is full of thumbs-up, sooner or later it would also get me, right?
Well, after 39 boring episodes, the only thing that Utena left behind is a collection of plot holes. And the feeling that i've wasted 15 hours of my life.
Anyway, i can fully agree that this picture is amazing.

Perhaps the reason why people are bothered by the this series' plot (me at first, included) is because it's not a narrative at all. Unlike your everyday anime, it doesn't intend to tell a story. Maybe it's just the geek in me that caused me to love this show for its generation and culture value. It's full of symbolisms that portrays a LOT in the deeper pointOV. You can rewind thrice the episode and come up with a handful answers and more interesting questions. And yes, plotholes everywhere and ridiculous symbolisms althroughout indeed. If we're comparing this to any other anime labeled yuri (labeled anything at all, really), this is sh!te! But these there are reasons why it's deemed a masterpiece (in a unique sense). Many does not get it at all and share elfbs-san's hatred.
Well... It just means Utena isn't your cream's perfect cherry. No one is forcing you to love it.
More importantly, I love this fanart.

hatred... what a big word! :D
Simply put, i didn't liked it. Also, my reaction to it is stronger - probably - due to disappointment. Reading around, you see only praise to utena, so i was expecting the perfect show.
To my taste, the story is the most important side of a show. i can overlook other weak spots if the story is nice and solid. Sadly (for me) story is the main weak spot of utena. That's all.
well, that's just my point of view, i'm not trying to force it onto anyone.
Peace & love
PS: on a side note - totally OT - let me share my joy with everyone: not only Pulse is getting a printed english release, but - finally - jast has released Flowers.

Same creator from Yurikuma Arashi? This guy has some of the worst use of symbolism, its obtrusive, spammy in amounts, and distracting sometimes even to the point of obfuscating the narrative itself. Feels like someone shoving metaphors on the screen "LOOK SYMBOLISM! METAPHORS! SO SMART! MAKES THINK! WOW!" Just fucking terrible.
Like a generic music video.
The best use of symbolism is the ones that support the narrative (be it the plot, mood, themes, and even characterization) through subtly. It also can be in large scale, like the entire thing (plot, characters, etc,) can be a metaphor entirely, while also maintaining that subtly, simplicity, and non-obfuscation. Where watching through, one might not even notice that theres metaphors on-going. Simple and fitting of the world, not something that might as well have the text "SYMBOLISM" splattered all over the screen when its rolling.
(what the metaphor may be representing does not need to be directly related/relevant to the plot)
Simple, subtle, fitting, and well paced. The ones that don't detract from the narrative if not caught/understood.

Okay. Uhm... okay. Errr.... yeah.
It somehow warped into a conversation about anything but Utena. I don't have anything against what you said about that one. (But I did sit all 12 eps because I'm a beggar and can't choose.)
