What ever happened to this series? I kinda lost interest after the author defended AI translations (and even before that I forgot watch past S1).

Fuck ai translations and the replacement of translators. Ai translations are garbage and even the worst human translations are better, but there's plenty of good official human translations. I hate it when people defend ai, and in that regard screw the author for that behavior. I dropped the series and sold my physical collection of it when that happened.

Then you read articles about how original artists had to intervene because the "translators" added so much shit that wasn't originally there. Or outright rewrote the whole damn thing.

I don't think just because there's sometimes issues with human workers that it's good to replace them all with ai. Instead it's better to work through the human issues and continue to hire human employees. Humans are also capable of understanding and nuance that ai isn't, and additionally ai is run by fascist losers that only seek to make themselves richer not make anything better. Also even by association you're dying on the same ai slop hill that bigots that think "ai translations will make media no longer woke" are, so that's certainly a choice.

As for "what happened to the series", I think the anime actually pretty much caught up with the manga by the end of S2 (which I think was a fantastic example of an academy/school arc done well), corresponding to manga chapter 95, and the manga has been slow to continue since. I guess it's somewhere in the 110s, so barely enough content for a new season, if that.
If it ever comes to that, I'll definitely gobble it up.

Falling for fascist propaganda while being part of a site like Dynasty is definitely crazy.
AI isn't apolitical, as FluffyCow said it's 100% fascist, not to mention it needs to steal human work to exist. Fuck all the way off with the AI defense. AI needs to go.
And fans are also not immune to political bias, just look at how popular K-On or any other series with mostly white-passing characters are with fascists.

Guess I committed a wrongthink crime against the great nation of Dynasty. But till someone slaps those paid translators to fuck off from ruining my hobbies, I won't change my stance. Leftwing or Rightwing, I don't care; I just want to enjoy the few things that I still enjoy.

Translation is an art as well, anyone using Dynasty should know this. The effort that goes into human translation is valuable and skilled work, it's part of why our community translators are amazing people. It's something also where our translators should have opportunities for official translation work as well.
You mention examples of bad actor translators, well there's also official translators that love their work and respect what they work on. I've seen creatives that work with translators to bring their creations to new audiences, and they greatly respect and appreciate those translators. Those people shouldn't have have their jobs at risk because of objectively evil ai companies ruining everything, and it's not human translators that are ruining everything it's ai and the fascist CEOs running ai companies. Siding with ai and wanting to replace humans with it is siding with theft, environmental damage, the destruction of art, and a long list of other things including surveillance, loss of human rights, and so on.
Also Dynasty is mentioned because it's a Queer centric community, and I strongly believe ai is anti Queer. Which is exactly why so many bigots on social media are attracted to ai.

You can't pretend to care about art and especially to be neutral while siding with actual fascists. I didn't remember who said it but I found that convincing.
Also AI (especially LLM) translation is bad in quality. A group translating Wikipedia articles with LLM has resulted in incorrect, fabricated, replaced, and unrelated sources being added to the translation result.
No one who actually knows anything about the proccess of translation and localization could say MTL is better. If you're ignorant and think literal translation is better than actually conveying the meaning of text, maybe.
