I've always had the headcanon that Mai was INITIALLY being 100% serious in her confessions, but every time, at the last minute, she'd think "Wait, this is gonna be REALLY funny" and sabotage her own confession. She's not even shy or anything, she's just too much of a troublemaker to properly confess.
