It's not really subtext since they both explicitly show a care and need for each other beyond friendship. Think Setsuna x Konoka from Negima.
If you haven't seen this...you are missing out. Hands down the biggest sleeper anime of fall 2014. Don't be too deceived by the Studio Gokumi tag...it has all the good that that studio brings but all the rumors about it being super dark (in a completely different way from Madoka, mind you, it's not a copy) are more than true. More than true.

It's always only subtext, at least thanks to the two VNs, the Vita game and other oficial materials, it's canon that Tougo loves Yuuna, they don't say anything explicit but it's pretty obvious Yuuna loves Tougo, maybe one day if they make season two it goes full yuri.

Nope haven't read it. You should search for Washio Sumi wa Yuusha de Aru on baka-tsuki. It's technically a prequel to the anime but it's advised to read it after it.

Well the prequel-sequel is more a prequel that fits either after or before the season. Not like Fate/Zero vs. Fate/Stay Night. The creators and producers have expressed explicit and lively interest in making a second season. The series is way surpassing all sales expectations in Japan (delayed steam here in the US since it was delayed 2 1/2 weeks for simulcast compared to other shows). So we shall see. I'd be more than delighted to see a second season, since they obviously don't need surprise factor to move the audience to tears. Just hard to see where they would go that'd be worth a second cour.

Just finished watching it (marathons for the win) I'd say it was darker than Madoka, but it also has a happy ending As for how yuri it is, Madoka beats it in that department then again it would be hard to beat Homura's reasoning of why she was doing that (love). Seems like they were gearing up for a second season, because the very last few seconds it said "Yuuki Yuuna's Chapter", so perhaps if there is a sequel it will be with the new heroes, since it seems like our girls aren't/don't need to be heroes anymore

^ Yeah I certainly consider Madoka more yuri as well. And I suppose it's all semantics. I don't think anyone in their right mind would call any of the Holy Sextet or of The Hero's Club straight, but I suppose the specific relationships are embedded in subtext.
Darker than Madoka though? I'm not sure about that one Time. Certainly dark but Madoka is, literally, in a whole 'nother universe. Different of course, but a bit darker

@ColonalCat perhaps because I knew pretty much everything before I watched Madoka it didn't seem as dark, but there is something about getting your body parts/functions stolen and never able to die that is darker than just repeating stuff, also Tougou's 10 times attempted suicide
Also seems like Tougou is more or less confirmed lesbian and in love with Yuuna while Karin has a crush on Yuuna (seemingly). The creators though try to push Fuu x Karin. That's taken from the VNs

Just remember episode 10 where we got a deep look into Homura we find out these close friends have been separating themselves entirely from everyone in order to fall curse to the contract dooming them to fall into a deep despair and become witches eventually themselves. And that this has happened since the beginning of time. And Homura saw her loved one die in front of her eyes, having to kill her herself 100+ times.
Yuuki Yuuna was certainly dark but there was no tragedy other than Tougo's poor past. Madoka was hardly anything but tragedy except for the end of the anime series and a glimpse of it in the end of Rebellion. But I see where you are coming from.
Also Tougo and Yuuna are practically head over heals for each other, but I think Karin doesn't really have a someone special yet. She fights hard because of Yuuna, but not really sure it's anything romantic. Creators seem to be edging toward FuuRin for sure though.
