I'd rather Nozomi in Ravenclaw. Considering she bears slight similarities to our fav eccentric Luna Lovegood <3

Pffffft Nozomi is too kind to be in Slytherin, even if shes very cunning. I see her in Hufflepuff cause she works hard to help others and super loyal, or in Ravenclaw because of her "spiritual powah!" and wit. Eri could be Gryffindor cause her bravery and chivalry (or Hufflepuff really cause she works super hard and values fair play.) The ones I see that could fit in Slytherin are Nico and Maki lmao the tsuns cause they're ambitious. Honoka would be Gryffindor hands down, she have the kind of thoughtless bravery and a lot of nerve. Umi could be Ravenclaw obviously for intelligence or Hufflepuff because her ceaseless hard work. Rin I think would best fit into Gryffindor, shes daring and brave on the inside. Hanayo and Kotori are kinda hard for me to place into any house because their main qualities are shy and sweet. To me, Hanayo could fit under Gryffindor in the Neville Longbottom type of way with her budding courageousness. Or she could fit in Hufflepuff for her patience and loyalty. Kotori idk but I'm thinking Hufflepuff as well for loyalty.
I think the artist just picked Gryffindor and Slytherin for the rivalry to add an extra cute dynamic to NozoEri.
TLDR; this is how I'd place them:
Nozomi: Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff
Eri: Gryffindor or Hufflepuff
Maki: Slytherin
Rin: Gryffindor
Hanayo: Hufflepuff or Gryffindor
Nico: Slytherin
Umi: Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff
Kotori: Hufflepuff
Honoka: Gryffindor

^ I agree with most of your cast, except that Umi could go with Gryffindor too (Think of Hermione, a case where bravery and friendship win over intelligence?) I can picture her tortures Honoka with all the readings in Gryffindor's common room. (Poor Kotori, she must be lonely without her childhood friends lol)
I always think of Maki as a Ravenclaw, but what you said makes sense considering how ambitious and cunning she could be.

Maki isn't really ambitious, she give up on her dreams to to follow the path her parent decided for her... (it could still be Slytherin) but she's a totally naive good girl, the sorting hat would never put her in this house
I don't see her as Slytherin. Make her follow her dreams and she a total Gryffindor, I kinda see her as Neville (same coward)

I saw her as someone who value being the best in everything and aim to win no matter what. The type that discreetly looks for flaws in the rules and wisely use it. Also, her haughty attitude kinda reminds me of pure-blood Slytherin stereotype.

Where did you get that ? In the anime she more like a resigned naive always alone (at least at the beginning) good girl. Well she may be hardworking even if I don't remember it that much but I don't get where the flaws in the rules thing come from at all. Honestly, I remember her being very upright behind her facade
For the haughty thing, well that's her tsun protective reflex. I don't know if it's really slytherin... maybe

In 5th live concert there are intermission dramas. In one of them, Maki defeated Rin in mochi eating competition by tricking her (to sprain her own neck, poor Rin), saying "No one said it's against the rules, right?". Also in a drama CD track (I forgot which one it's from, the one where the first year ran a maid cafe), she also tricked Honoka a bit, no harm done, though, just super hilarious.
And when listening to her solo and songs she's the center, my mind started giving her more dark, mature image.
But I totally agree with you about Maki being hardworking and naive in the anime. That's what I love about her, a know-it-all who believes in Santa Claus? Made me fall for this character right away.

Forgetting all the Harry Potter thingy, did anyone else notice Nozomi looks slightly taller than Eli in this?

Slythrin doesnt mean evil. Its cunning and ambition. Just power corrupts. Remember Harry would have been in Slythrin if malfoy didnt make a bad impession and wasnt an asshole.
