I think the greatest example of modern character development is Takamori fans. They heard what Calli and Kiara said, took that in, then once the two did start hanging out again and providing ship material, they completely adjusted the understanding and portrayal of the dynamic

^Yes
They didn't even kill the ship, they just wanted people to be less crazy about it (some people took it the wrong way at the time and get mad at them tho)

People got really into it so Kiara put some distance between herself and the ship, so her and Calli wouldn't be solely defined by the ship and so fourth. That's at least the gist that I remember but it's been awhile. I do remember Kiara at the time also saying it was fine for artists to continue drawing the ship, so it was never the death of the ship either.

^ I'm gonna be real here, it's not really their fault or the fans'. It's kinda hard to deny at this point that Hololive pushes for ships and yuri bait because people LIKE it. Gacha games have caught onto this too, it's why half the female characters in modern gachas are on the verge of making out 90% of the time.

^Kiara herself really pushed the ship and defined it at the start, as basically thee Holo EN ship at the start of the branch. After it became one of the primary focuses of her fans she needed to tone it down a bit. Especially because some of the fans did get really intense about it, and that entirely is on those fans. A person can enjoy a ship and be chill about it, being unhinged and taking the ship too far is entirely the fault of the people in the shipping sphere that get that way.
Also gacha games from 10ish years ago were into shipping so I wouldn't say that's new.

I must say is impressive how is the only OG Holo ship to still have a on-stream presence while every other has either died or moved off-stream.
