Reanako's great. I adore her. Meanwhile Mai...is a loser.

Mai's not a loser. I'm personally rooting for Mai to go off to France and become a successful model...and never, ever come back.

Mai has some good points. Like her friendship with Ajisai-sama. And..... um. Umm.... hold on. Her ability to reflect on her wrongdoings?

I'm largely out of the loop with the series so it's interesting to see how much people either like or absolutely hate Mai lol
The fandom should be interesting to watch when the anime releases, as she seems very divisive in general

^all the anger about Mai is like 80% just from people who haven't read the novel and are missing out on loads of character development and backstory for her that the manga hasn't gotten to yet. Unless it somehow gets 2 cours there's no way the anime is getting further than the manga's at now, so anime-onlys are only going to be exposed to early series Mai, when she's at her worst. The reaction is not gonna be pretty...

^Interesting, yeah that can be an unfortunate case with adaptions sometimes. I've had that experience with other series, knowing that a character gets better past where the adaption ends.

^^I don't follow this series but that description makes me think of how anime-onlies see Tomoko from WataMote. They treat her as some sort of anti-Komi or example of how introverts will never have friends or some crap like that when she was just making enemies in her mind and forcing herself to be someone she isn't, and eventually made friends who like her the way she is.
That said, I'm not up to date with the manga.

Actually reading the LN is exactly why I call her a loser. It's because of her character development. I won't go into details but she's kinda pathetic. Especially because her friendship with Ajisai-sama proves the situation with Renako she put herself in was entirely avoidable and that she'd probably have been Reanako's girlfriend if she'd just actually respected Reanako's terms.
Meanwhile we have over here Ajisai-sama.

^Roodypatooti I doubt whether they're a manga or LN reader has much to do with how they feel about Mai. Most seem to hate her becaus of the incident. Meanwhile, I can't stand her because of her egoism. The development that comes in later LNs is too little too late for me and many others.
