Wait. I haven’t played this game, is the OG chief a man?

Clorinde_mutsuki_thumbnail
Givemeanaccount Mar 3, 2025 11:18PM

^ I haven’t played either, but according to the game’s wiki, the player can pick for the chief to be either a man or a woman

^yeah if they're wondering about the "female chief" tag it's because the player character can be a male or female chief depending on player choice from what I know

To add info, not only is the playerbase mostly women, but from what I've heard there's differences in dialogue to make F!chief have more romantic dialogue than M!chief. I could be wrong tho cause I wont be caught dead as M!chief

From what I understand, most of the player base chose Fem Chief. Actually, you can consider that to be the case for most gacha games.

Bagpipe%20cute
FluffyCow Mar 5, 2025 3:02PM

^Hmm I think that's the case with Path but I'm not sure about that with most gacha games. As someone who always plays female and non-gendered/non-binary characters over male ones, I feel from what I've seen with a lot gacha fandoms online is that lot of people pick male characters / label male gender automatically to non-gendered/non-binary characters. That's something that I clash with when it comes to the Arknights fandom as one example, for me the Doctor is non-gendered/non-binary, though if I were to pick male or female I'd go with a female Doctor, however the average person in the fandom calls the Doctor he/him and automatically labels the character as male.

With FGO most people treat the "canon" protagonist as the male one, and even the devs throw the female protagonist under the bus unfortunately. Same with Fate anime adaptions, if there's a male or female protag they're going to go with the male protag and treat him like the canon protag. Which sucks imo, and I'd love to see more adaptions with the varied female protagonists in the franchise.

I worry about that with the Genshin anime supposedly still in the works, I really would love for them to do Lumine as the protag...but I worry that Aether will be picked instead. I especially worry because there's a whole part of gacha and related fandoms that play the male protag and are weird about it for varied reasons. Probably not the place to go into it further, so I'll leave at that for the moment.

Fun fact, if you search "hetero" and "pathtonowhere" on danbooru you get exactly 10 pictures, out of 3.3k

^^^Genshin anime if it will be made it will 100% have Aether as protag.

A lot of people who play gacha games and are invested enough to talk about them online, at least in the West are men and a lot of them are labels MCs as male because that's allow them to self-insert. You can see it the clearest in games where 100% or almost 100% playable characters are women. Nikke, Blue Archive, GFL Azur Lane even games like Honkai 3rd. It's really hard to find MCs depicted as female in these fandoms, no matter how ambiguous MC is written. I mean there is a reason why GFL had a "cucking drama" and a lot of people on Reddit and such were talking like they IRL partner got stolen.

FluffyCow Mar 5, 2025 4:31PM

^Yeah that unfortunately rings true from what I know, and a lot of media wants to cater to audiences like that sadly. Also personally I generally prefer to see protagonists as their own character, and I'm not one for self inserting, though either way Female and Non/Gendered/Non-Binary characters for me. So I think I'm definitely on the outside of things on average with a lot of these fandoms.

Also good lord yeah I heard some about the "NTR drama" with GFL, and I couldn't roll my eyes into the back of my head any farther if I tried lmao

Comments "discussing" it were WILD. And places like different "XMains" where X is usually male MC are craaaazy. It's funny how people are usually talk how same-sex shippers are crazy, when places like that are like 100 times more insane. Still remember Aether and Arleccino situation, lol.

And I'm usually doing the same. With very, very few exceptions even in RPGs I don't create "myself" I'm creating an character I'm either control or play, but I don't "insert" myself into. I think only games I kinda did it were first Baldur's Gate and the Sims, like 20 years ago. I never inserted myself into gacha protagonist, I would feel kinda weird since almost all of them have something like "canon" looks, personality that we can, at best steer, but not really change, or they have to take some choices, no matter what we think about it. So I always looked at that like I'm just an observer in the story, that they all are their own characters, not "me".

And I just learned there are male sinners in PtN (per the wiki 7 out of 100, +1 NB with male first name). I always thought it's mere generic gooner bait so I'm surprised it has apparently so many female players, I wonder why and if its by design.

I prefer a protagonist of any gender over some nondescript husk of a person; sadly that often does not imply being well written. But then, the Pokémon protagonists got big having the personality of polystyrene foam.
(Extra shoutout to the PGR way of having your ambiguous protagonists refereed to as "Sir" and "Mistress" in various places, then doing a character model reveal, and it's just Spartan MJOLNIR armour. That must've been an intentional troll.)

@Moedred: Yeah I've seen some of the male self insert types be really unhinged and mean spirited. I do remember with Arleccino that around her gacha banner she was unfortunately subjected to some gross homophobic nonsense from artists, I think mainly Aether fans/self insert types. Which is part of why I'm not looking forward to an anime adaption focused on Aether.

I digress as it's not pleasant to talk about and we're getting further away from the topic of this art, so I'll just conclude my thoughts by saying being an observer of a story is how I usually look at things as well.

^^^^the playerbase is just really gay. Hell the dev team has like, a singular guy from what they've discussed to players. Add in that while some designs are definitely sensual, it's not the same kind of energy you see in stuff like idk, Senran Kagura to name something.

You should see how PTN character cut outs end up covered in lipstick at CN events. Women LOVE these women

Also, most of gacha games, heck, games in general, that let you choose your PCs gender default to male and you have to change it to female, while Path to Nowhere, iirc, specifically defaults to female chief.
