Someone knows their history; that's an old Chinese "cash coin"; the hole in it was so they could be conveniently strung together in groups, kind of like with a roll of coins.

^ We really should have hole-y coins in the West (I live in a rural area where cash is still useful) because it looks so convenient!

^ in many places, including my place, no. In much MORE places in the world, yes - either due to the developmental level / infrastructure not being there, or due to it certainly being there, but people not trusting other things than cash (Germany, for example)
