^I've never heard anything like that, so I'd appreciate some kind of source. I was playing off of the comment made by "BigBowlOfSauerkraut" about it being a deleted scene, by saying oh yeah it's definitely canon, because I enjoy the ship. Regardless of canon or not, I enjoy the ship, so my comment was joking around in a I wish it was canon kind of way.

^There was an interview in which she said Laios isn't autistic he's just a normal guy and when asked about ships (I think specifically Marc and Falin) She said she never writes those characters thinking about that kind of stuff but people can think whatever they want. I remember cause she got flack for the Laios thing (and maybe the shipping thing as well). But finding those things after you once read them somewhere is a pain so feel free to ignore what I said.

Yeah she basically said she didn't intend for those things but people are free to interpret as they wish. Pretty much a polite way for an author not to reject people's fandoms and interpretations. I think it was pretty clear from the story that she never focused or intended romance much at all, even from Laios. The interview just reinforced that idea in a harmless way. Of course people are arguing about it regardless.

Hmm interesting. I mean the series is explicitly not romantic so I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't have any intent on writing the characters in a romantic way. If she's open to people doing what they want with shipping that's cool, and more than enough for me. Since shipping is something that can be fun, but I think some folks take it too seriously, so I wouldn't be surprised if people got mad about that...even though the series is again explicitly not romantic.
Ultimately people shouldn't expect the author to confirm their own interpretations. Especially with how I saw Twitter defining the anime in ways that makes Dungeon Meshi very different than it actually is. I've seen people from the outside looking in, where they expected the anime to be entirely different due to the fandom's intense focus on head-canon.

Yeah I noticed that too--the idea of setting expectations that won't be satisfied. It's mostly fine but if people go into the show believing there is actual romance, they'll be disappointed. Still Falin and Marcille are cute regardless, even though she portrayed them like a trio of siblings more than anything. None of it hurts anybody, as you said. Plus this animation is great!

If I may interject something: I've seen the interview re: Falin Marcille spread as "She said she didn't intend for Falin/Marcille." But she doesn't say that. She's asked about the fan reaction to Falin Marcille, and her response is, "If I care too much about how fans react to my work I think the story becomes less fun or interesting. So I try not to think too much about how readers will react. In general, I'll just leave the reader's imagination." A safe answer to a safe question perhaps, something could be lost in translation, but unlike the question about Laios being written as autistic where she does outright refute it, she isn't saying No, I Did Not Think About Queerness Writing This At All.
This is ultimately a distinction without much difference, I don't mean to initiate some kind of pointless speculation or anything. Dunmeshi is not a manga about romance and making meaningful/fun interpretations without being a cop is the right way to go about it. Thats outright what she says in the interview! I just think that its sorta doing the same thing as before right, centering the conversation around her Authorial Intent on something she didn't even say--we're all so used to writers going "i didnt write this character as intentionally gay but its a fun interpretation" for decades we just assumed she did too--when I think really we should just take her at her word that she wrote a good story and fun character dynamics with the purpose that a lot of people would end up interpreting them differently, including ways she didn't anticipate like Laios's autism, and let the author die like she wants.
Again not a pushback against anyone here, the conversation's already there basically, Ive just started seeing reddit and twitter start using that idea as a cudgel against shippers now, and I wanted to curb the misinformation a little

More so that her response is along the lines of saying that's not what she was focused on writing, but people can enjoy their head-canons. Which is fine, her response sounds entirely reasonable. Especially since the story is a pretty contained adventure that's focused on a friendly and familial feeling dynamic with the party members, along with exploring themes of life and death, aging, so fourth. That's where a lot of the heart of her writing with Dungeon Meshi is I think.
I don't think people that enjoy the shipping should get mad at her, and I don't think people should weaponize her words to be anti-shipping either. Generally so many sides of any situation are so busy focused on slinging mud, it turns into a whole headache. Live and let live is a good saying for this kind of situation in my opinion.

I took the interview as a nice sign of the author distancing herself from the fandom enough for it not to interrupt their creative process. This is something I think a lot more creators should do nowadays. Social media ruined many things and the creative process is held hostage by those who scream loud enough. Since that's usually what happens, it's not the majority, it's the loud folks.
