Is the transgender tag warranted?
Yu's not technically transgender. She was born cis-female, temporarily cursed to be anatomically male (during which time I suppose she could be argued to have been transfem, but the idea that magic makes it possible to be transgender not-from-birth is a whole can of worms...) and then un-cursed, making her cis-female again.

While Yu's situation is obviously not something that can happen in real life, her plot line in the story is still about a girl who is unhappy with the gender that was assigned to her and choosing to live in a way that is true to herself and the expression of gender she feels most comfortable with. Looking at it from only a biological or anatomical perspective misses the point; her mother decided for her to be a boy, but Yu makes the choice to live as a girl.

^ That makes sense. I guess I was hung up on the fact that Yu was already living as a girl when she was a very young child, if I recall correctly, but it's more about being assigned a gender at all. AM(minus the AB).
I don't think "allegory" is quite the right word, given how literal the parallels are, but I also think arguing semantics about that is pretty pointless.
