I'm still mad OtoPre gave them boyfriends
Edit: OtoPre also brought back Nozomi x Coco, which is a ship I dislike for various reasons

there really wasn't any need for that, they could have done Mai's plot without the need paired them up with some no names, couldn't they have leave them in the ambiguos or subtext space, they already have 3 het romances they will probably put the rest of their time focusing, did they really have to throw Saki and Mai under the bus like that?

Precure writers are generally really bad at writing het romance (just look at the mess that is HapCha), and Saki x Mai is super popular even in Japan. This is a show made for the older fans of the series, so I really don't see why they preferred doing something nobody seems to have asked for instead of, y'know, making said older fans happy.
This feels like Witch from Mercury all over again, even if they never promised any same sex relationship in this case. Doesn't help that Bandai is a big player in both shows.
It also doesn't help that official artwork for OtoPre often looks like this:

Yeah they really need to stay away from het romance in this series i mean look at HUGtto! Pretty Cure after watching that thing from beginning to end its relations is a trainwreck I mean The main villain is the mc's future husband who is freezing time after she died to preserve happiness as eternal while fighting their daughter in death battles each day and when he goes back to the past he is in a relationship with one of his minions while having an affair with another minion while meeting his dead wifes past self the mc trying to gradually gaslight her so she would come around to his thinking basically trying to brainwash her so that when time freezes she would be by his side as his while he was with two other women and then the train wreck which was the shipping of the fairy, the yellow cure, and the mc daughter that turned into a baby basically giving two doomed ships its just why`

In Hugtto I completely ignore George (including present George since he also looks quite a bit older than Hana from what was shown) and ship Hana with Homare instead (she's even blonde like Hugtan)
Yes! Precure 5 (the main series OtoPre is a sequel to) pairs Nozomi (an underage kid) with Coco (a fairy that turns into an adult man), then one day decides to pair Komachi (another underage kid) with Nuts (another fairy that also turns into an adult man) despite them pretty much not interacting for most of the series, and then its first sequel series, Yes! Precure 5 GoGo! pairs Syrup (another fairy that turns into a human, but at least he's around the same age as the girls) with Urara despite them interacting even less than Nuts and Komachi and keeping on not interacting after the episode that starts pushing them as a couple. And OtoPre is bringing all of these back because they weren't bad enough back in the day.
Mahoutsukai Precure (the one where the two main characters kiss in the official manga) is getting a sequel series similar to OtoPre, I can only hope they won't take notes from OtoPre about writing romance.

I hope so too Mahou tsukai Precure was one of my favorites so i was so happy they were getting a sequel so i really hope they don't kill the ship officially like splash star which were another pair i really liked.
Also Lucky i wish i could ignore George i loved Hugtto when it was airing but after it was all done and the whole picture was revealed i was just why

I think I saw somewhere that someone in the staff said "Otopre isn't the ultimate canon" or something like that, but that doesn't change the fact this is what they decided to give to the fans.
