Sadly, this stuff will be a rarity and self-insert stuff will dominate as always.

^^I don't know, Hololive does get a pretty solid amount of Yuri ship art, though I won't argue that MORE can never hurt haha

Doesn't feel more strange than to ship any voiced fictional character.

But those fictional characters are just that. Characters

Some Vtubers are more personal extensions of the person behind them, other times Vtubers are more so characters. So I think it depends, also depends on what the Vtuber is comfortable with. I've seen successful Vtubers commission sexual art works with their other Vtuber friends. Often there is a layer of separating the Vtuber character/persona from the real person behind them, which is part of why I think a good amount of Vtubers say it's fine for people to have fun with it and make fan art of ships.
Also meanwhile Nerissa is over here liking fanart of her licking the foot of one of her genmates lmao, along with her and Irys making out, and her and Kronii making out as well.

I wouldn't take any of that as evidence of anything other than they know what gets 'em page views.

If they really had a problem with it they would not hit like on the art, as it's entirely in their power to ignore stuff like that, also yes it gets them views and that's why they often play into ships and fueling artists. Part of my whole point is that it's not that serious usually, Vtuber shipping and honestly shipping in general is at it's best when it's not taken that seriously, and is just a lighthearted fun thing. Unless the Vtuber takes direct issue with it I just don't see the harm personally.
I do understand that some people think Vtuber shipping is weird and they don't like it, that's fair, I would say at that point Black-List the "Virtual Youtuber" tag on here, and other tags such as Hololive and Nijisanji. Block/Mute the artists on social media such as Twitter.

All "VTubers" are characters. That's why a person uses one instead of their own likeness - to create a wall of separation between the avatar and the real person. Even if some choose to incorporate more of their own personality into that character -- which is also the case with many fictional characters in anime/manga -- it's still a character. It doesn't have the same face or body as the real person, so there is no harm done. It's entirely fair game, and if a VTuber took issue with it (unless someone was profiting from it), I would see that as bad form and a violation of the basic understanding an artist has with their fans.

Well, they've debuted now. And Shiori is pretty straight. Nerissa's main teetee partner is actually Bijou

Well Nerissa just said on her "Unpacking" stream to draw whatever makes you happy, just don't put it under the main art tag but other than that she doesn't want to restrict anyone.
