Choose your character:
-> "Aren't I a genius? I can become a pro gamer...get a sponsorship...a cosplayer girlfriend..."
-> "Aren't I a genius? I can become a pro gamer...a cosplayer girlfriend...get a sponsorship..."
I'm super behind on twitter and discussions around Bocchi so forgive me if everyone already knows this, but my head blew up when I found this panel. Apparently my Japanese friend says that the lines are "I could be a pro gamer..." "Ad revenue" "Cosplayer girlfriend...", so it's "ambiguous enough to suggest that bocchi MIGHT be sapphic, or that she's simply projecting onto a stereotypical pro gamer (typically male) with a cosplayer for a girlfriend". I like to believe Bocchi is aligning herself with the idea of a pro gamer but ALSO really digging the idea of a cosplayer girlfriend. It seems very open to interpretation.
Edit: I get the sense that linking "I could be a pro gamer..." "Ad revenue" "Cosplayer girlfriend..." together with verbs to form "get a cosplayer girlfriend" or "become a cosplayer girlfriend" is an accidental translation thing, and it's meant to be single phrases one after the other.

@botmj The latter order is, of course, flat-out wrong. The raws debunk this order. I don't even see the point of bringing that up.
I was unaware that this was a matter of any dispute. She's a character in a Manga Time Kirara comic, she's gay unless we literally see her schtupping a dude on camera

Yeah I've seen the raws. I know the actual order since my interest was in finding out the subtext of the original Japanese translations and sharing it with those who are curious how confirmed gay gay Bocchi is. The first part was a joke about the way the English translations can be read, because I think it symbolizes the (alleged, according to my friend) Twitter battles that happened over this over whether or not this panel makes Bocchi sapphic or not. I hope Bocchi is sapphic, canon and undisputed, but I don't mind if she's not. Kita is already gay as fuck for Ryo and it's not even trying to play it off. In the end, I think any headcanon is a fun time and hurts no one, and I like to imagine that Bocchi is gay af.
I have a personal theory that the author is queer and indulgently weaves instances of Bocchi being fruity into the story. Still, it's anime and Japanese culture (apparently) has the Class S "it's not gay until they fuck", so it seems like the typical yuri fanservice we get when the authors aren't ready to commit to making a character gay gay.

After I checked raw version, both interpretations are actually right. But when you looked into contexts, it's kinda lean toward "Getting a Cosplayer GF". I think some are seeing it as "I can become [noun], [noun], [noun]".
Knowing Bocchi, I highly doubt she want to be a cosplayer herself, eventhough the idea is that "she can be [anything]" but I don't see why getting good at game is crucial to "be Cosplayer GF". And why specifically "Cosplayer GF" and not just "cosplayer" then?
As someone mentioned it already. This way, it'll line-up with Japanese audience's comments.

beyond raws or translation, or the obvious thing that she's a kirara character - what other connection there is between 'pro-gamer' and 'cosplayer' that isn't one of the most famous JP cosplayers, Enako, dating a pro-gamer? I keep seeing people discussing it and for the life of me I cannot even fathom what they're talking about. the literal only connection between "cosplayer girlfriend" and "pro-gamer" I know of is obviously that one: meaning, if you're good at games, hence a pro-gamer, you get a cosplayer girlfriend. is there some kind of wide-spread thing where pro-gamers become cosplayers bc they're good in games and I've missed it?

Just to add my grain of sand to the topic, someone already posted on twitter the "reaction" from the japanese to this chapter, and it seems all (or most at least) of them read it like "become pro player/getting cosplayer GF". They're even making jokes about Seika doing cosplay just to win Bocchi's attention-
Pd: Also, yes, as we all know, Kirara characters live on this weird "Yuri limbo" where they're gay AF but at the same time none of them confess their love for each other, this may not be the exception-

Why is there so hard for some people to accept that Bocchi may be lesbian, like, why that would it be any bad for the character or the series?

^ Homophobic people exist. And for some, they won't take anything as proof unless it's Bocchi making out with a female.

You have homophobes, but Bocchi is "waifu of the season" and "perfect waifu" for some weebs. They dream about cute, beautiful, "nerdy" but also socially inept waifu so she won't go out and be "stolen" from them. Same reason Futaba from P5 is so popular. Her being canonically gay would ruin their fantasies.

^^ Which is extra dumb because Kita already has her eyes on her and anyone that saw the anime knows it, she's gonna get that pink guitarist regardless of whatever Bocchi was before this panel was translated.

just to add onto this comment section, the guy doing the shitty TLs that were machine translation edits and tried to claim this panel wasn't gay, DetectiveAme, admitted a while back that they intentionally changed their "translation" from the original. They truly are the actual worst.

Yes, one could interpret it as her merely projecting onto a pro-gamer stereotype. But you have to also take into account the several times she in any way fantasized about getting girls or wanting girls to fall for her. When you consistently write your character to be into girls, what does that make her?
