@GrimEater: well it was hinted toward the end that Korra and Asami was definitely more than friends if you know where to look. Also the official comic confirmed that they're girlfriends (as in dating, not girl friends).

@GrimEater either thats a joke or youve never seen it since they end up a couple - its certainly clear at the end they are gonna become one- and during s4 and 3 top a lesser extent everyone was picking up vibes from them.

No, I'm just using the original series' couple Aang and Katara as a comparison. Plus Aang and Katara were always implied. The Last air bender ended with a kiss between them, Korra ended with hand holding. And no, I don't care about a Twitter post or the comics, a show should be able to stand on its own.

@GrimEater
The writers wanted to put the kiss in there and pushed hard for it but got shut down. The Twitter post and follow-up comics were them continuing the fight for their vision.

@GrimEater
When the network imposes limits as to how far you can take things, it is not really fair to criticise the creators. And I disagree about the comics, they are essentially an official continuation of the story so implying they are irrelevant is kind of disingenuous.

That said, I do have issues with Korrasami. For one thing, while the show was limited in depicting romance between them, they also failed to depict much of anything else in regards to their relationship. Korra and Asami barely interact with each other for much of the show, even when they are supposed to be close friends.

This is a recurring theme with the series, the personal relationships between characters are so criminally underdeveloped. While the original Avatar had this tight group of friends-and-companions-for-life, Korra's gang is far more loosely connected. Although we are often told how close friends they all are, we are rarely actually shown that, and Korra/Asami is no exception. They could have at least shown an actual close friendship between the two, one which would later bloom into a romance; in that respect literally nothing was stopping them.

People might argue that they had limited screen time, but so did the original Avatar and it succeeded just fine on this score (establishing close relationships within the whole group). Plus, Korra had all the time in the world to waste on that godawful love triangle nonsense, so it is not like the show was that pressed for time.

As for the comics, well... The original Avatar comics were very good, the art was basically lifted straight from the show, writing was competent, they felt in everything like a genuine continuation which seamlessly carried on the minor plotlines of the series. By contrast, both Korra comics are kind of garbage, with Turf Wars (the Korrasami one), being especially egregious. The "plot" is riddled with holes and goes pretty much nowhere by the end, and it is painfully obvious the entire thing is just a paper-thin excuse to showcase the main couple. The art itself is... bad, to put it mildly.

Also, even outside the bad plot the writing is atrocious. Like when Korra introduces Asami to her parents and reveals their relationship. Her parents are instantly accepting and supportive, but they also warn the couple to be careful because other people might be prejudiced in this regard (as Korra intends to let the entire world know about her relationship). Cue Korra attacking her family for being "narrow-minded" and storming off in a fury, apologising to Asami for her parents being "insensitive".

Just pretend the comics or Twitter post never existed.
Could you still call Korra a lgbt show? I don't think so.
If the actual show cannot establish their relationship within the show, than they've failed to convey it in the show.

Obviously, I wish they did.
I wish we got a kiss between them in the show. I wish they could express their love. I wish I didn't waste my time seeing Korra and Asami suck face with Mako, but that's not the reality.
I believe lgbt deserve better representation, like Steven Universe, Adventure Time, The Owl house and She-ra.

@UranusAndNeptuneAreJustCousins

ATLA had more episodes in total and per season which gave it more room for character driven filler and even though it got cancelled early*, it still didn't have to live in fear of not getting renewed for multiple seasons like Korra.

TLoK has a lot of flaws, and Korra and Asami don't really have enough screen time, but the shows does what it needs to get its points across, even if it has to stoop to subtext to get there.

And as much as TLoK failed, it did succeed in breaking the barrier for wlw couples in western children's animation. We got a lot of kisses out of most if not all subsequent shows.

*the biggest result of this is azula missing her redemption and getting dumped in the trash with all her flaws blamed on mental illness. Easily the weakest part of the show, it tarnishes Zuko's arc as well by softening their abusive upbringing.

@NexiKuro
Three big inaccuracies here. Firstly, ATLA was not cancelled early. It was not cancelled in any way. It was a critical and commercial success, and a major one at that.

Secondly, Azula's abusive upbringing was very much explored in-depth, in the comics, and how the combination of both her father and her mother's influences (although that was never her mother's intention) warped her mind.

And thirdly, TLoK never had to fear of not getting renewed. All four books of the series were approved and bought up by the network before the first episode even aired, giving massive benefits to the creators in terms of what they could now do with the story, given that the airing was secured no matter what.

In fact, it was because TLoK was bought up in advance by Nickelodeon that the show was not cancelled. TLoK's viewership declined significantly after book one and it continued to plummet all the way to the end of the series. In fact, with the third book the series received such poor ratings that mid-season it was removed from Nickelodeon's broadcast and relegated to online distribution. Under normal circumstances such a series would have likely been cancelled, but since TLoK was already approved and payed for under contract in its entirety, that was not an option.

How quickly people forget that the team behind of TLoK fought tooth and nail to keep the show going (they had to air the last season exclusively online if I'm not mistaken). And that final scene in the series was a HUGE step towards representation in children's media. Just a few years prior, Cartoon Network had to take down a video speculating a relationship between Princess Bubblegum and Marceline from their YouTube channel.
If you go watch videos of people reacting to the TLoK's ending you'll see how much that scene mattered not too long ago. Korrasami crawled so shows like Steven Universe could walk, and She-Ra and The Owl House could run, Bubbline could become canon, etc.

Anyways I just came here to say poor Korra might be feeling unwell because her spine looks broken as hell :(
