^well it doesn't really help that Crona's actual sex is a mystery for the ages - as well as irrelevant for both their (rather important) role in the overarching storyline and their complicated bonding with Maka over various encounters.

Kinda? Since no one ever asks them what gender they are so we don't actually know how Crona sees themselves. But since the original Japanese never genders them I guess it'd be apt to call them nonbinary

More like "???". It's never specified anywhere and they're so skinny and androgynous that trying to eyeball a guess is a wash, doubly so with the rather stylized artstyle.
Far and away the least of issues with that kid anyway. Their mom, the witch Medusa, is right up there with Gendo Ikari and Ragyo Kiryuin in Top 10 Caring Anime Parents so... yeah.

The age old question... does non binary x girl count as yuri? I've never imagined crona would be attracted to men so I guess they're like a half lesbian half straight man, though I'd rather describe them as a dark enigma with a gentle love for women
