^the term is "client" methinks, though I've also seen "principle/principal" used in that context. Protégé is entirely different in meaning. (If anything Schwarz could be considered a protégé of Ceylon's dad to some degree...)

Schwarz has been watching over Ceylon for a most of Ceylon's life and is closer to her than anyone. The moment in the story where it became clear that Schwarz would side with Ceylon over basically anyone else I was instantly sold on this ship.

^ for me it was when it was revealed that Ceylon was initially interested in studying origium because she wanted to help Schwarz
