The Honest Axe fable is surprisingly popular in Japan (or at least with Japanese artists).

For one,A link between worlds is just a "remake" of A Link to the past where the reference is also made and like Bugpope has linked, it's a reference to the Honest Woodcutter.

Every time I see a parody of the honest woodcutter, I think of a MadoHomu parody of it. I have no idea if it's an image or doujin, but I know for sure we have it somewhere here... Can anyone help?

Yeah, this fable keeps popping up in Japanese stuff (Animal Crossing, Zelda, hentai etc) but is fairly unknown in the west. I don't think any of the collections of Aesop's fables I read as a kid included it.

you know, I'd always assumed it was a native japanese fable, considering that I've seen it so extensively in jp media and yeah, not at all in western stuff.

You really don't expect it to be about freaking Hermes, that's for sure.

I had first learned of its origin playing a .hack game and ended up looking it up. It asked if you dropped a golden or silver axe or neither.

There's even a Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Stand based on this fable.

It was used quite a few times in Tani Takeshi's 4koma series, where I first learned of it.
