^The remake covers up to leaving Midgar- nowhere near the golden saucer. Even the NEXT part might not reach it- depending how many parts its gonna be.

The ship still existed with the original game, could easily find fanworks/art/stories going back that far. Just a resurgence now with the remake and Tifa and Aerith getting equal screentime and more interactions with each other from what I've heard.

I think you're just seeing a lot more gay art of this pairing now because there's way, way more gay art being posted online in general than there was 23 years ago.

@Sakura Cartelet that was my first yuri site :) (if you dont count xena fanfic sites) I still have copies of some of the fanfic on there. I never posted on the forums or anything though, just looked at the pics and stories.
I mean, we literally have a user called TifalovesAerith who is in this site for years now. So of course people shipped them well before the remake. It's just now that are getting more popular thanks all the delicious Tifa x Aerith food the remake provided us
