^^ the ‘yuri’ only occurs in the manga, and really only comes into play in any stretch after something like 70 truly cringeworthy chapters (that’s a positive for what watamote goes for). The yuri is mostly subetext, but it’s pretty blatant at points and there’s plenty for artists to feed off. Ucchi in particular at least has an official canon interest in tomoko, and tomoko herself is bi.

Telling people to not skip chapter when they had already quit due to the cringe is silly. I went straight to ch70 and I've missed nothing. Went back and slog through a few earlier ones but glad I did not have to start there

I'd suggest at least skimming the chapters leading up to the school trip. Getting a better picture of Tomoko's life and personality makes her changes all the more satisfying.
Plus it's fun to see how early you can spot characters in the background who later become important.

The authors earn a hat tip for their foresight in making random background characters just distinctive enough they can be readily spun up into more prominent colourful cast members as needed/desired. Nemo is one of the earliest and most notable examples, having spent the first in-universe year as one of Okada's unnamed friends who had like two lines total over that entire period...

Yuri being rather stronger than she looks is just one of those running gags; but she's rather more possessive than "protective" of her friends and at best takes a while to warm up to new people in her relationship matrix as eg. Nemo could attest - and Shizuku has the superpower of pissing off other girls pretty much just by existing, so...

This is the image and discussion that led me to getting up to date with Watamote... ch 70 is definitely the catalyst for the yuri, but the character growth in ch 115 is the reason I stayed. Thanks to everyone who made a good argument to read it. Also, now being able to appreciate it fully... I love how accurate this art is.

Also, Shizuku is a girl Tomoko has wished she were a boy in order to steal her from her boyfriend. The Watamote irony there is that Tomoko was actually trying to imitate her beloved sempai Imae Megumi by befriending and mentoring Shizuku, and ended up perving on her (and maybe succeeding in getting her to fall for Tomoko).

In the manga, the only one that's gotten yandere with Shizuka over Tomoko is, surprisingly, Emily Uchi. She even said "don't get cocky, bitch!" when it was obvious Shizuka was charming Tomoko. The humour there is that this is exactly what Shizuka went through with other girls in middle school and the BOYS they were interested in, who were swarming around Shizuka. Now, she has to deal with the Lesbian Edition®
