Yuri's just been feeling neglected by Tomoko most of the time. When Tomoko talks to her and gives her some special time, she cheers right up.

On top of that, Mako has basically blown her off in favor of Minami and her obscure object of desire, Yoshida.

And she has to keep up a hell of a tsundere shell to keep from giving in to Hina's advances.

I think is more of an issue about how different Yuri's personality was in the introductory chapters compared to her current self.

Sure; I'm just saying there's a reason for that.

Man, I always forget how different Yuri used to be the first few times she appeared, seemed as normal and social as every other character, makes me glad she changed, she became more unique as a character. But I would love it for it to be adressed rather than never explain why her personality changed in the span of a few chapters so drastically.

^ Actually, nothing really changed. We first see Yuri when Tomoko is organizing the group for the Kyoto trip. She's being jilted by Mako and she won't talk to Tomoko. Until Mako and she make up, she's morose and withdrawn, welded to her headphones and not talking to anyone. After that, for a few chapters, she finds herself making new friends and gets relatively cheerful. Back in school, she's cheerful when she sees Tomoko.

After that, though, things start to change. She's resigned to sharing Mako with Minami, but her new friend Tomoko starts making new friends and there is less and less time for her. At the second year wrap party, she gets very insecure because she wants to be with the friends from the trip, and leaves early. Along the line things happen like her crashing the meet up with Tomoko, Yuu, and Koto, where her insecurity about friends gets harsh. Slowly but surely, Hina and then Asuka start crowding her out with Tomoko, Mako is growing more distant, Yoshida is in another orbit. She starts getting morose and more alienated.

Yuri was never different. She was just at her best when we first met her. Like Tomoko, there's just an undertow that leaves her depressed and sullen when she doesn't fit into the world of other people.

@KateWarer, well...If this is like in the tale parodied in this pic, Tomoko wils say that it was neither of them, but a regular Yuri.

So in a sense, this works.
edit: Wait, if this is like in the tale, Mako will reward Tomoko's honesty by giving her the Yuri that fell in the pond, plus the two Yuri that she's holding. Moko will have a harem of Yuri.

ΗΕΥ! Is this a reference?? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Honest_Woodcutter#Other_versions I think one of Hakka-ya's BuCap manga had "Which Kana did you pull out of the river? The one who plays flawlessly (Gold?) or the one who is amazingly powerful (Silver?)" and Hisa the goddess says "Neither. the one she pulled out of the river was the Kana that always plays into tsumo/dealer sanbaiman" (the actual axe). In Japan, the story is either Buddha or a wood spirit/fairy like in this image.

The BuCap version is yet another veiled opportunity for Hisa to put Kana in her place and make it abundantly clear she has no chance with Mihoko, but it did follow the story closlely

Lightsteam I agree Tomoko's honesty will net her a triplet foursome.

This is cute — I'm fond of "Honest Axe" references.

(The original usually has a sequel where a scheming fellow finds out about the woodcutter's new gold axe, so goes and dumps his axe in the same spring/pool — the god/fairy/whatever gives the options, but the guy is greedy (and presumably didn't get the whole story) so claims the gold one — and the god says "Liar!" and he loses it all.)
