well,the show isn't yuri/shojo Ai, it didn't have to, this is why the based god gave us doujin and the holy prophets who bring them to us westerners.

Thats how yuri is treated in general when its only sprinkled around a random series, except this one its a long-running joke. (Was a reason of why I never actually got interested in yuri, thought it was all the same to that or stuff like Strawberry Panic, which is set in a fantasy world of lesbians and superficial and forced relationships and stupid melodrama)
