Also I'm not sure how to break it to you, but a visual novel is more like a book than a game.

Either way, it's not like there aren't ways to get VNs for free if money was actually tight...

The way I see it, visual novels are both video games AND books. Though I might be wrong, given that all I know about visual novels comes from a scant few videos (I think 3?) I've watched over the last year, as well as an ad I've watched like 6 or so years ago!

^Besides choises, most VN's have no gameplay, so they're not really games. Some VN's do have gameplay though (i.e. Neptunia games, DDLC, etc), so some of then are games in my opinion.

Jun 26, 2019 12:42PM
^The Neptunia series games are not Visual Novels. They are 100% standard RPGs. Just becaus the story mode is in a similar style to a visual novel doesnt mean it is one.
Though you aren't wrong, there actually are VNs with gameplay interspersed between story segments.

^When I play Neptunia games I spend about 70% of my time in the story section. And I consider them (among other VNs with game play) a VN styled game, not a VN.

^90% of the game is gameplay. The story is always fairly short compared to the quests, grinding and trophies. Anyone who plays these games seriously, as ya know, games, will spend 20 hours not even seeing a dialogue box overall. Using CGs and sprites does not a VN make. The style is reminiscent, but it is really common in JRPGs. It's not a VN with gameplay. It's just a game. The creators, the publishers and the fanbase are all clear on this. You're the odd one out, sorry.
Anyway, Kindred Spirits is a true VN without gameplay and it is easy to get for free, so nobody has an excuse not to read it.

^^I didn't say that Neptunia is a VN with gameplay, rather a VN styled game. I only used "VN's with gameplay" in the brackets so that I wouldn't say the exact same thing outside of them. Even with 1% gameplay 99% VN, I would call it a game (like DDLC).
I understand that my phrasing was all over the place, but I never meant to actually call Neptunia a VN. And with this, I will stop commenting, since we have already went off topic way too much.

Friendly reminder: "Visual novel" is not synonymous with "choose your own adventure". There are as many of them with choices as there are without. Visual novels without choices are sometimes referred to as "kinetic novels".
Many of my favorite visual novels are actually kinetic. Kindred Spirits is, for the most part, a kinetic novel. It has a handful of dialogue choices scattered throughout, but the story will be the same regardless of how you answer them.
