^Yup it should be unfortunate / unlucky / pitiable - she is plainly not a loser- when anything happens it isnt because she deliberately does something pathetic, just that she had bad luck- like the crow stealing her lolly or wearing the coat hanger.
I think loser is a bad way to translate 残念な (Zan'nen'na) because looser doesnt convey bad luck really, more a pathetic person who always looses because of how pathetic they are.

"loser" perhaps isn't the best TL, for reasons elevown details. "unfortunate" is far too literal for my taste, but I went with what the official anime subs use (also it let me be lazy and not consider it further)

^^I didn't know the official anime subs went with that- the ones I was watching use unfortunate too. Then again official subs are often terrible so its not a guarantee they got anything right.
I don't really see why being literal is bad if it accurately gets across the point? and to me, calling her an unfortunate girl is way funnier than calling her a looser.. but thats just my opinion. Maybe pitiable girl would work better?

And the Brazilian translation uses "coitada" ("poor" in the sense of pitiful), which I think really doesn't work. It should have been "perdedora" (loser).
@MDLZ it took some time though. We got NakoBocchi fanarts before NakoAru.

I think 'loser' is a much funnier translation than 'unfortunate', however the latter is clearly more accurate. All of the jokes with Aru in the anime so far have fell kind of flat for me because calling someone 'unfortunate' just carries no weight. Maybe a better middle-ground could be reached with 'pitiable' or 'regrettable', but between 'loser' and 'unfortunate' I think I prefer 'loser', despite my usual preference for accuracy.

Anyways, while I'm kinda on the "loser>unfortunate" boat, I somewhat like the word they picked for the LA Spanish subs: "salada" which literally means salty, but it's also an informal "unfortunate". It's kinda cute.

Unfortunate is a word that you just don't normally toss around all the time unless you are talking about the series of unfortunate events.
Pitiful could have worked. Hopeless could have worked. Loser is the still the best out of all of em (Reminds me of the song by the Beatles and Beck) but no we got unfortunate instead.

I would say both those are wrong. The word she uses is Zannen, which in Japanese, can mean unfortunate, but is more accurately disappointing. And is used often in the “disappointing bishoujo” trope.
It also makes the most sense imo since she looks cool but isn't, which could be a disappointment.

@PureShipper Well, I think this is the root of the problem, which is that 残念 just doesn't have a real 1:1 translation. It's main use case is in a phrase which has a similar use case to the common English phrase, "How unfortunate," or "Unfortunately,..." which is why 'unfortunate' is a common translation for it, but as you say, the literal meaning is closer to something like 'regrettable' rather than unfortunate (from my experience at least).
