Somewhere, in a land safe from Kyoto Animation and their gang of yuri-baiting pieces of garbage, these two live happily together.

^If it wasn't for Kyoto Animation's yuri-baiting this pairing wouldn't even exist. Blame the author of the novels.

I, too, believe shows aren't allowed to be complex and should only exist to fulfill my own fantasies.

I too, am only able to consume the simplest media for enjoyment. It's impossible for anything complex to fulfill my fantasies even though there is absolutely no reason for the authors to make hibike het other than to appease a hetero audience that won't be watching/reading anyways.

I wish I hadn't brought this up; it's exhausting even to think about it. I do have a question, though, for those of you who have read the Hibike novels. All I read was a lot of the material relating to Kumiko and Reina through a fan translation. In it, what I picked up wasn't yuri of the sort they were suggesting in the first season of the show, but the ambiguity of an erotically charged friendship. So it made sense that Kumiko ended up with a guy (sort of maybe). Is this true? Because I did not get the sense that KyoAni picked up the yuri stuff wholesale from the novels.

^Kumiko gets into a relationship with a guy, yes. The yuri subtext in the novels, if any at all, was not intentional by the author. She just wanted to write dramatic and deep friendships between girls. When she saw the more romantic and more yuri-bait approach taken by the anime she apparently didn't mind it though. I just wanna say that Ayano Takeda isn't really guilty here, that was a joke. While it's easy to interpret many scenes and moments as romantically charged, that is more the reader's bias than anything. KyoAni does as KyoAni do, so we got what we got.

KyoAni gave us Kobayashi's Dragon Maid so give them some slack and we have a season 2 coming soon(hopefully this year).

^Indeed, I look forward to season 2. But Kobayashi was actually yuri from the start, so they just stayed faithful. It's more comedy and family vlaues than focused on yuri though, which is probably why they picked it.
